Gone are the days of itchy hemp and loose fitting tie-die, eco-conscious fashion is in and it’s pulling no punches. Valentines is the perfect time to highlight how and why sustainable fashion is going to be the sexiest thing of 2010:
1. Support On The Catwalk
2010 is the U.N.’s International Year of Biodiversity. To support the campaign, nearly 50 top designers from around the world contributed to a show and strutted their green stuff in Geneva in January. According to Lucas Assuncao of the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development, sustainable fashion is now pulling in between $150 million and $200 million in sales per year; “an increasingly significant chunk of the market”.
2. ‘Green Is The New Black’
Off the catwalk, models and celebrities are making their green statements clear through their choice of clothing. Emma Watson (Hermione in the Harry Potter films) is passionate in her role as a designer for the green brand, People Tree:
“I think young people like me are becoming increasingly aware of the humanitarian and environmental issues surrounding fast fashion and want to make good choices but there aren’t many options out there.”
Livia Firth, wife of Colin, has started something called the ‘Green Carpet Challenge’, which she talks about on her Vogue blog in the UK. Stella McCartney‘s famous cruelty-free fashion label has been worn by a huge range of celebs, most recently Anna Paquin and Reese Witherspoon.
3. Make A Statement
Green fashion isn’t just sexy for celebs! Beautiful, sleek clothes are very widely available. Take a look at these adorable organic panties or this gorgeous Pushup Cocktail Dress from AngelRox. We’re going to be adding loads more to our Style section soon, so stay in touch!
4. 2010 Fashion Forecast
There are lots of predictions for what 2010 will look like for eco-fashion. Looking forwards to the spring and summer season, sustainability is definitely in the line up. Ecouterre compiled a list of 16 predictions from movers and shakers in the fashion world . The common theme seems to be that fashion will be green-up not just because it’s, well, fashionable, but because they believe in it. That means greater transparency and a more thorough eco-friendly approach right through the supply chain.
5. A Survey Said So – It Must Be True!
Last but by no means least, according to Nuts magazine in the UK, a green conscious is pretty hot!
“In a survey in Nuts Magazine, women were asked what they found most attractive in men. Surprisingly, they put caring about the environment top of their list, above a good sense of humour.”
