Why The Best Pajamas Are Eco-Friendly

First Up, The Lowdown:

The word ‘pajama’ (or ‘pyjama’) was imported from the Hindustani language and comes from the word Payjama, which literally translates as ‘leg garment’. Pajamas first became popular in the West during the British colonial era in the 19th Century. Although men started wearing pajamas as nightwear, it wasn’t long before more elegant examples- made from silk and richly coloured cotton, were worn as general loungewear.

It took until about 1920 for the trend to catch on with women. Coco Chanel’s lounging pajamas transformed popular opinion and the fashion took off in a big way. These days, pajamas are used to describe just about anything from full length jacket and trouser nightwear through to clothes for relaxing.

Reasons To Buy Organic

Seeing as we spend around one third of our life asleep (and a whole lot more lounging around), it’s really important that the material we choose to put next to our skin while in bed is good for us. We all know how Nicorettes work, right?

The average cotton t-shirt is actually only about ¾ cotton. The rest is made up of chemicals and leftover pesticides from what was used to grow and make the t-shirt. As well as the potential risk that poses to your health, think of the very real damage all those chemicals do to the producers of the cotton and the environment in which it’s made. That means that your pajamas needs to be organic and I mean 100% organic. (If you prefer to sleep in your birthday suit, then you should make doubly sure your sheets are of the same quality).

A Better Night’s Sleep

Buying fair trade and organic pajamas will certainly help your conscience sleep better, but what about guaranteeing a more thorough rest for your body?

1. Wearing proper pajamas, rather than just throwing on an old t shirt, helps to improve your ‘sleep routine’ and get your mind and body used to the idea of sleep once you’re suitably garbed.

2. Natural materials, like cotton and silk, are great for breathability and will keep you warm in the cold, or cool when it’s warm. A steady temperature is crucial to a deep night’s sleep. If you suffer from overheating in the night, these materials are great for absorbing the moisture and holding it away from you body.

3. Ideally, the temperature of your room at night should be no warmer than 70 degrees F. Wearing proper pajamas will allow you to follow this advice more closely than if you were to sleep in less cosy attire!

All of our nightwear is 100% organic and comes from sustainable sources.
