As winter is about to be a distant memory and the last few snow piles in the yard are melting away, it is time to think Spring! There are many great foods that become “in-season” and instead of stews and roasts, we move to grilled food on the BBQ and lots of fresh vegetables! Just the thought of a savory grilled chicken breast and a succulent variety of grilled vegetables, makes mouths water! I thought I would share my favorite ideas for meat, poultry, and spring veggies as well as a top green choice for that BBQ you were planning on buying to take you into the next grilling season! So put those parkas and snow boots in the closet and get ready to wake up your taste buds from that long winter’s nap.
Fresh Local Asparagus
Nothing says spring like fresh local asparagus. As with other spring vegetables, the season is short, so as soon as asparagus starts appearing in your store, start buying it and enjoying it. The stalks should be firm but tender, the color bright and the tips tightly closed. Eat on the day of purchase if you can, as the flavor starts to diminish quickly after picking. Asparagus is excellent steamed, or boiled and fabulous roasted in the oven on a baking sheet with a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice and a dash of sea salt.
Organic Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast
For grilling, my top choice is chicken breast. It is lean, full of protein and if you grill several breasts you can eat your dinner and have plenty of leftovers for salads, fajitas, etc. Greensbury Market’s Organic Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast is even more convenient when they arrive at your doorstep trimmed and individually wrapped, so you can defrost as needed. These organic chicken breasts are juicy and tender, low in fat and cholesterol and free of hormones and antibiotics.
Organic 100% Grass-Fed Top Sirloin Steak
If you are more of a beef person Greensbury Market also has an excellent option as well. The Organic 100% Grass-Fed Top Sirloin Steak is delicious, versatile and lean. You can turn your favorite beef dish into something a little special, or simply serve as a healthy, great-tasting steak. Plus, this top sirloin steak is organic and 100% grass-fed steak.
If you are in the market for a new BBQ grill this season, newer and potentially greener grills continue to emerge, including pellet grills and hybrid grills, which optimize electricity but accommodate small amounts of charcoal and wood for flavoring purposes. These grills are harder to come by, as they’re not available everywhere grills are sold, but they are rapidly emerging as the newest green grilling trend. Traeger is the pioneer in the pellet grill arena. Read more about the pellet grills and accessories for these grills at Amazon.com
I hope I have inspired you to shift gears and “spring forward” just as you have changed your clocks! Enjoy the foods and tastes of the season and remember that it will be many months until winter!
