Entertaining in the New Year: Organic, Healthy, Fair Trade Recommendations

For many of us, spending more quality time with friends and family tops our New Year’s resolution lists for 2011. In our hectic lives, it is so important to take time to relax and enjoy our loved ones, even when there isn’t a major holiday involved. You can start by planning a festive gathering this year that does not need to be fancy, but rather heartfelt, featuring yummy food, some bubbly and a crowd of your nearest and dearest.

Here are some of my suggestions on how to get creative with your 2011 soirees:

Organic Sparkling Wine

New Year’s Eve isn’t the only time to break out the bubbly. Champagne and sparkling drinks make any occasion fun and lively and feel like a celebration.

If you’re trying to be more “green” this year, how about trying one of many delicious organic selections? The folks over at the Organic Wine Company have several options. The Organic Wine Company says its wines are made of certified organically grown grapes and that it promotes “environmental responsibility.”

If you are in the mood for something fruity, how about the Blanquette de Limoux Brut Bernard Delmas at $19.99 per bottle? It is a delicious sparkling wine with hints of green apple and lemon flavors.

Or if you prefer a trendy bubbly, consider a bottle of 2009 Prosecco Riva Moretta Perlage at $16.99 per bottle. It has a clean and crisp taste and remains a very popular choice.

What to Bring to a Party: Delectable, Green, Fair Trade Host/Hostess Gifts

It’s holiday time and although one can feel a bit frazzled, I feel it is important to take time out of our busy schedules to visit with friends, co-workers and family members. It can be challenging to find that “perfect something” to bring as a host/hostess gift, but hopefully these ideas will make things a bit easier.

Since food is my thing, my suggestions are primarily edible selections but I did add a few food-related suggestions as well. None of the items cost more than $25 so they’ll also be easy on the wallet:

Fair Trade Chocolates

If you have a sweet tooth, how about bringing a few beautifully wrapped chocolate bars to a holiday gathering or party? Divine Chocolates is a fair trade chocolate company that is 45 percent owned by West African cocoa farmers and, according to Divine’s web site, “ensures farmers receive a better deal for their cocoa and additional income to invest in their community.”

Divine Chocolate offers products such as Dark Chocolate Covered Salted Fudge, Milk Chocolate Nut Pralines and their 3.5-ounce chocolate bars in Dark Chocolate, Dark Mint and Dark Raspberry.

You can buy their products at Whole Foods or through their web site. The chocolate bars go for about $3.50 per bar.

Organic Cheeses with Fruit Spreads

If you are heading to a cocktail party, I love to bring a simple white plate with an organic cheese, some arugula, a jar of fig spread (or a fruit syrup) and crackers. You can add a small cheese knife if you wish. The guests can enjoy the appetizers and the host/hostess will be thrilled to have the plate and knife after the party has ended. If you want to make it fancy, you can always wrap the cheese plate in cellophane and tie with a ribbon. (I would wait until just before giving the gift to wrap it up.)

Here are some suggestions for the components of this gift: The Sonoma Syrup Co. sells a variety of fruit preserves such as Black Currant Berry, Candied Fig and Vanilla and Meyer Lemon for $9. The Meyer Lemon CheeseDrizzler is made in Sonoma in small batches with “organic California Meyer Lemons and a splash of California Dolce,” the site says.

As for the cheese, PastureLand, a Minnesota-based artisan cheese company, offers an amazing selection of cheeses that are crafted from organic milk from 100 percent grass-fed cows. PastureLand touts its eco-friendly practices on its web site saying that they use “intensive rotational grazing and year-round soil management to improve the vitality of our pastures and the health of our animals.” Cheese varieties include: True Raw Milk Cheddar, Goodhue Grass-Fed Gouda and Millville Aged 100 Percent Grass-Fed Cheddar.

Latkes: One of the Best Parts of Hanukkah

Latkes: One of the Best Parts of Hanukkah

I always look forward to Hanukkah and many may think it is the eight days of gifts that I enjoy most — and hey, it’s a nice perk — but actually, it is the latke that I eagerly anticipate during the Festival of Lights.

Not to downplay this glorious and incredible tasting dish, but the latke is actually a pretty basic potato pancake (think hash browns in the form of a little circle). Maybe it is the sour cream and applesauce that makes them special, or the fact that you really only eat them during the holidays, or maybe it is simply because they are so yummy! It does not hurt that they are fried in oil . . . does anyone know why this is? It is commemorating the oil that miraculously provided light for eight days.

I prefer the tried and true latke made with a Russet potato but have been known to dabble in the sweet potato variety. I have included recipes for both so you can try making them and seeing which you prefer.

Potatoes were ranked as number 11 on the Environmental Working Group’s list of the “Dirty Dozen” fruits and vegetables that contain the most pesticides, therefore many folks recommend that consumers buy organic for those items. Sweet potatoes, however, appear on the Working Group’s “Clean Fifteen” list, number 14, listed as having among the least pesticides.

To Buy or Not to Buy: The Case for an Organic Thanksgiving Turkey

As the chitchat surrounding Thanksgiving dinner gains momentum, the recurring question of whether or not to buy an organic turkey seems to be on many people’s minds. Let’s see if I can clarify for you the reasons why I WOULD buy organic this Thanksgiving.

The biggest argument for buying organic poultry mostly has to do with the fact that organic farmers DO NOT USE antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones when breeding their feathered friends. I don’t know about you, but I am fairly certain I do not want those kinds of things swirling around in my belly — or any people I care about — as we lounge in front of the TV after our holiday meal. Actually, I am positive I do not EVER want that swirling around in my belly!

Secondly, organic poultry is only given 100 percent organic feed. That’s right, in order to be certified organic, those farmers are not allowed to feed their poultry animal byproducts like traditional farmers do. It is a little creepy thinking about a turkey eating the ground-up parts of his cousin for lunch. Eww!
