We all know that our beloved Izzit is passionate about the outdoors – after all, that’s where he’s from. So when he learned about all of the great things the organization Get to Know Your Wild Neighbours was doing to help promote the national parks of Canada and the United States, not to mention improve everyone’s interactive learning experience with nature, Izzit immediately said “sign me up!” And after a long day out on the trail, what’s better than a soothing glass of chilled Ice Wine from one of Canada’s premier wine producers, Summerhill Pyramid Winery, who donate a portion of every purchase to the Get to Know Society.

First, the mission: Get to Know aims to provide folks – both young and old – with a simple and enjoyable way to get engaged with local green spaces. Ironically, Get to Know realized that one of the best ways to get people outside was to use something that ties most people to their desks…technology. The result is something they aptly call National Treasure. By incorporating technology in a truly different and unique way, they’ve created a fun and interesting interactive program that enhances the nature experience of the individual, while at the same time expanding their knowledge of the world’s wonderful biodiversity that exists beyond the computer screen. To learn more about Get to Know and all the great things they do, please visit www.gettoknow.ca.

Speaking of national treasures, the beautiful Okanagan Valley and the award-winning wines from Summerhill Pyramid Winery should be on everyone’s must-have list. That list, along with the bottle of Summerhill Pyramid’s 2007 Riesling Ice Wine we were tasting at the IzztGreen Corporate Headquarters went mysteriously missing last Friday. Coincidentally, Izzit was witnessed leaving work a bit early (but after sipping a little of this elegant wine from a renowned vintner, who could blame him if he indeed made off with it). We’re sure there’s a good explanation!

Although the stunning Okanagan Valley region of British Columbia produces many delicious wines that rival anything coming out of Washington State, Summerhill Pyramid is rightly famous for their Ice Wines. What makes these wines so unique is that they can only be made in cooler climates. Because the grapes are left on the vine to freeze before fermentation, only the water freezes, leaving the sugars intact. The resulting harvest output is smaller, sweeter and more highly concentrated. Both the 2007 Riesling and Pinot Noir Ice Wines are beyond excellent and worthy as daily sippers as well as make perfect holiday gifts. For more information please visit www.summerhill.bc.ca and for our American customers located in states that allow wine shipments, please visit www.summerhill.bc.ca/Wines/USA-Customers.

As if producing stellar wine isn’t enough, Summerhill Pyramid Winery also has a longstanding commitment to the environment. About 80% of the total grapes used in production are Certified Organic, and their stated goal is to reach 100% in the near future. They have achieved Certified Production status in their cellar and their Kelowana vineyard is in the process of applying for their Demeter Biodynamic certification. So beyond the fact that the wines are elegant and delicious, you can rest assured that in buying Summerhill Pyramid products, you are supporting a business that truly cares about the environment. They’re partnership with Get to Know is just “icing on the vines!”

So, please join Izzit (wherever he is) in raising a glass of Summerhill Pyramid in toasting and supporting the Get to Know mission!

As avid hikers, outdoor lovers, and regular “on-the-go-Joes,” IzzitGreen couldn’t have been more excited to come across organic peanut, almond, and hazelnut butters from Justin’s in Boulder, Colorado. We nearly passed out when we found out that Justin’s also makes milk and dark chocolate peanut butter cups. Just think – a tastier and healthier version of that famous candy that rhymes with “pieces.” Needless to say, we’re hooked.

There are so many things that we like about Justin’s – all of their nut butters are made in small batches to preserve premium quality standards and fresh taste; they source local and organic ingredients as often as they can get their hands on them; they have innovative “knead & squeeze” packets that are easy to shove in pockets, briefcases, and lunch boxes; and they’re focused on sustainability and reducing their environmental impact and footprint. The fact that they’re Rainforest Alliance Certified just puts the icing on the cake…or the chocolate on the nut, in this case.

Justin’s is not only delicious, they’re made with the highest quality and most healthful ingredients money can buy. And it shows in the nutritional benefits: each one of the delicious flavors has 6-7 grams of protein per serving and is completely free of trans fats, hydrogenated oils, gluten and dairy. They’re also low in carbohydrates, completely vegetarian, and certified kosher. And if that’s not enough, the nutrient-rich almonds have been shown to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol. So if milk “does a body good” as they say, then Justin’s just might “do a body better!”

Founded as a cottage industry by Justin Gold in 2002, Justin’s has grown into a successful national brand with a loyal following of passionate customers. Look for Justin’s at your local grocer or order their products online at Justin’s Online Store. And while you’re at it, check out our mutual friends over at Conscious Alliance. They’re partnering with bands we listen to every day to collect and distribute food to those in need. Such a great concept, and we’re on board.

Portions of this review were taken from www.justinsnutbutter.com.

I think that when the phrase, “the best of both worlds” was coined, this is what the creator had in mind: This spring, Patagonia added to its already impressive resume of creative environmental initiatives with the launch of the Patagonia Music Collective.

What is Patagonia Music?

Patagonia Music is a project that successfully joins the outdoor and music industries to support several important environmental groups. Patagonia has joined forces with well-known and up-and-coming artists to produce exclusive benefit songs that can’t be found anywhere else. Patagonia has discovered how to exploit the beautiful synergy of eco-art by providing a vehicle through which musicians can make direct and meaningful contributions to specific causes while engaging their fans in their efforts.

The artists currently involved form an eclectic group including Pearl Jam, Maroon 5, Moe and Ziggy Marley.

How does Patagonia Music Work?

The benefit tracks can be purchased individually or in volumes on iTunes. Then, at least 60 percent of the download proceeds are given to the associated non-profit environmental group chosen by the artist.

Some of the groups involved include: EarthJustice, Climate Cycle, Urban Farming and Surfrider Foundation.

You can also visit the Patagonia Music website and stream live music of hand-picked songs from some of Patagonia’s favorite rising artists for enjoyment and exploration.

For even more hands-on fun, check out the free Patagonia Music iTunes app where you can download new tracks, stream live music or tap into the “Dirtbag Diaries” podcast for amusing and inspiring outdoor storytelling.

There are currently 25 benefit tracks and two volumes to choose from. Plus, with one new benefit track and three emerging artist tracks being released each week, it should be easy to indulge in culture and support a cause.

And if your into eco-artists, check out Izzit’s own Artist in Residence for 2011, The Real Matt Jones.

When you get ready for Passover – which starts at sundown on April 18 and runs until April 26 — a huge focus is on the food, namely the matzo and the elements of the ceremonial Seder plate. When families gather for festive Seder dinners,…

When you get ready for Passover – which starts at sundown on April 18 and runs until April 26 — a huge focus is on the food, namely the matzo and the elements of the ceremonial Seder plate. When families gather for festive Seder dinners, brisket and matzo ball soup also may play some kind of role as well.

So what to do if you’re a green, organic type of person who wants to be eco-conscious as you celebrate Passover? IzzitGreen’s got some suggestions for you:

Organic Matzo

You eat a lot of matzo during Passover week, not just during Seder dinners. And if you want to go the organic route, you’ve got a few options.

A couple of matzo makers specialize in Passover fare using organic spelt: The New Jersey-based Matzah Online sells 100 percent certified, organic spelt, handmade matzo. Haddar also has an organic, whole grain spelt matzo that it sells which is Kosher for Passover.

Another option comes from Whole Foods which sell Aziz organic Passover matzo, made from organic whole wheat and is certified USDA organic.

If you like to cook/bake with matzo meal for your Passover week dishes, Kemach offers organic matzo meal that’s Kosher for Passover, made from whole grain organic spelt and certified USDA organic.

For your matzo ball soup — which, of course, won’t be as good as Bubbie’s — Shibolim sells an organic whole grain matzo ball mix. You can also use organic, free range, low sodium chicken broth from Imagine Foods which is Kosher for Passover.

Organic Beef Brisket

Looking for your brisket to be “green” as well? Izzit found a couple of retailers selling brisket, organic style:

Rocky Mountain Organic Meats sells organic, grass-fed beef brisket roasts that have been smoked with mesquite, apple or hickory wood.

Park East Kosher, a New York City-based Kosher butcher shop, will ship its organic brisket to you in time for your Seder feast.

The Seder Plate

When it comes to the ingredients for the Seder plate – a hardboiled egg, bitter herbs like horseradish, a shank bone, charoset (apple mixture), a vegetable and lettuce – there are plenty of opportunities for you to green them up and not just by using organic vegetables and by making your hardboiled egg of the free range, organic type.

For the bitter herbs, otherwise known as horseradish, you could sample some organic horseradish made by the California-based Organic Horseradish Company, which claims it’s famous for its hot, they call it “volcanic,” horseradish.

Another Seder plate star is a sweet dish called Charoset (or haroset), made with apples and nuts. It’s easy to convert this to an organic version by using organic apples, organic walnuts and organic honey.

Organic, Passover-Themed Apparel

A holiday that gets everybody thinking about green? Well, sign Izzit up for that. As you can imagine when Izzit heard that people all over the world don emerald clothing, march in parades, have a pint or two and celebrate everything green on March 17, it became one of his most anticipated days on his calendar.

This year, Izzit wanted to get in on the fun and help green up St. Patrick’s Day — and every other day of the year as well! — by bringing to your attention three very cool recycled glass beer mugs for everyone to enjoy their green beers in this year.

The Green Glass Company’s Copenhagen Tumblers

All right, Izzit knows that Copenhagen is not in Ireland, but these tumblers are just so cool that we had to lead off with them. They also happen to be green in every sense of the word, from the way they are made to their actual color.

The Green Glass Company, which makes these tumblers, traces its start back to 1992 in South Africa, and from humble origins they’ve grown into the largest maker of reclaimed glassware on the planet. They have been able to achieve this spectacular growth because they remain true to their recycling heritage and their core business principals “to push beyond the average, strive to make a difference, thrive on creativity.”

While these recycled beer glasses may be green, it is quite clear that the Green Glass Company is thriving and making a big environmental difference. A set of four tumblers prices out at $32.50.

But what to put into those tumblers? The Izzit team thinks that a light ale or refreshing golden, pilsner style beer like the Kenzinger from the Philadelphia Brewing Company would make a great match for these green beauties. (Read our full post on organic beers here.)

BottleHood Tumblers

What a concept, making beer glasses out of used beer bottles! The folks at BottleHood have taken this concept to a new artistic level, producing what Izzit thinks are some of the coolest and funkiest beer drinking motifs he has yet to come across.

Based in San Diego, BottleHood was founded as a way to create jobs in their “hood” and to help the environment. What they have created is glassware products that are unique and that have the quality of something brought to life by a local artisan.

BottleHood’s recycled glassware is crafted from bottles — primarily wine, beer, liquor and soda — that come from restaurants, bars, homes and events in the community. These are then re-purposed into the type of truly innovative tumblers you see here. BottleHood also makes other great products from recycled material such as juice glasses, vases, pendant beads and some Murano-like light fixtures.

Izzit’s favorite glasses are the ones bearing the Dead Guy Ale image (great glass, great ale!), the Left Coast Asylum (great name, great graphics!), and, because Izzit is a little righteous when it comes to his pint, the Stone Sublimely Self Righteous glasses. BottleHood tumblers are available on their own cool site or through Amazon.com. They run from $15 to $30.

For a twist on a classic Irish stout beer to fill those tumblers, Izzit would recommend you try Full Sail Brewing Company’s Black Gold Imperial Stout.

Turning Discarded Windshields Into Pilsner Glasses

Windshields and beer should never be spoken in the same sentence unless we are talking about this unusual product. In this case, Uncommon Goods has found a company in Columbia that is turning unwanted glass from automobile windshields into some of the best looking Pilsner Glasses Izzit has come across.

Sold as a set of two for the price of $24, these glasses are heavy, sturdy and strong. Each recycled glass is handcrafted and because of that, each one will differ slightly in texture (the definition of unique!). The slightly greenish-blue hue goes well with St. Patrick’s Day. (It happens to be a leftover from the tint originally added to lesson the glare of the sun while driving.)

For these Pilsner Glasses, Izzit recommends the Simcoe Spring Ale from our friends at Peak Organic Ale in Portsmouth, Maine. The piny, fruity hops of this cold-conditioned ale really pop in this type of glass.

So there you have Izzit’s take on some hip companies that are doing some wonderful things with recycled glassware. Have a responsible pint and impress your friends with these one-of-a-kind products. Now Izzit, about that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow . . .

Image credits: BottleHood, Green Glass Company, Uncommon Goods.

As the music and entertainment industries change and evolve due to the expansion of internet and social media-based content, a positive result of that change has been the organic “greening” of the industries. While hard copy CD and DVD sales are in a predictable and steady decline, consumers are demanding more media content than ever before, and they’re getting it online. The DIY music scene has exploded, and a movie that was filmed with virtually no budget using an HD camera from a corner retailer now has the ability to compete with big budget studio productions.

IzzitGreen recognizes these changes and has established a program to support and promote greening and sustainability efforts in music and entertainment, along with the artists that are on the front lines making it happen. We’re proud to introduce the first IzzitGreen Artist in Residence, The Real Matt Jones.

About Matt Jones

Since graduating from Texas Christian University (TCU) in 2004, Matt Jones has been touring the country as a singer/songwriter and solo artist playing shows with the likes of Landon Smith, Blue October, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, Sister Hazel, Guy Forsyth, Men at Work’s Colin Hay, Uncle Kracker and Rod Stewart, among many others.

Matt’s also active in film and TV where his music can be heard in the feature films Adventures of a Teenage Dragonslayer, Angel Camouflaged, the short film Intrepido and the award-winning, feature-length documentary Absent with James Hetfield from Metallica. A native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Matt Jones is a regular performer at both the New Mexico Bowl and the New Mexico State Fair. His single, “You Don’t Lie When You’re Lonely” received global airplay as part of the Hollister Summer Playlist 2010.

We recently caught up with Matt as he was taking a break from touring to understand more about his passion for sustainability and green initiatives, and to hear about his upcoming album HISTORY, which marks the fifth album from The Real Matt Jones, due to be released this summer.

IzzitGreen: Matt, you’ve had another busy year of touring. Tell us where you’ve been and what you’re up to.

The Real Matt Jones: It has been busy. Sometimes I would rather just give my license plate number instead of my home address to let people know where I’m living! This last year I spent a big chunk of time developing the Midwest market — the big focus was on Chicago, with trips to almost every state in between — and continued to grow the Southwest and the Pacific Northwest markets, to include Vancouver, BC.

Right now, I’m working on mixing my new album HISTORY and writing some specifically commissioned tunes for more film and TV projects before I return to the West to tour and attend the movie screening of Absent with James Hetfield from Metallica in San Francisco. Can’t wait!

Changes in the Music Industry: Downloads vs CDs

IzzitGreen: How have you been affected by the changes in the music industry? Do you even sell CDs anymore or is the majority of your music downloaded through Amazon MP3 or iTunes?

TRMJ: Absolutely, I’ve been impacted, as have the majority of musicians that I know. Almost every online purchase comes in the form of a download. I like that direction for a number of reasons:

First, downloads are less wasteful. The typical pattern that I see amongst listeners, even if they do purchase a hard copy CD, is immediately to download the music to their MP3 player and essentially store the CD on a dusty shelf. Downloading music removes the waste created by CD packaging and it removes any other waste that might be created by disposable shipping materials.

Second, downloads are more economical. Where the initial investment for musicians to pay for CD production, packaging and shipping is usually in the range of thousands of dollars, initial investments to release music in downloadable form is typically under $100, including distribution through Amazon MP3 and iTunes. Also, musicians don’t have to worry about storing huge warehouses full of their CDs while they are waiting to sell them. Downloads offer an infinite supply of product that is delivered directly to the consumer on demand.

Ultimately, downloads are more flexible. Musicians now have the power to distribute their music to a worldwide audience while spreading the word about their music and picking up press along the way. The days of having to send a CD, picture, bio, stickers and a folder of other swag to every venue/label/magazine that you wanted to build a relationship with are gone, thank goodness. Now, musicians have the power to publish an electronic press kit with all of that information, or send downloads of their music directly to the people that need to hear it.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love CDs because of the aesthetic quality, and will be consistently looking for ways to make them more economical and less wasteful.

Matt’s Favorite Green Causes/Initiatives

IzzitGreen: What green initiatives and causes are important to you, and why?

TRMJ: I’m a huge proponent of renewable energy. In my home state of New Mexico, we have a huge capacity to harness wind and solar energy. Each present challenges, of course, but I’m encouraged by the number of public and private entities that are conducting research in both fields. From what I have gathered, there isn’t a single source of renewable energy that is the messianic answer to our reliance on fossil fuels, but as each source becomes more realistic and manageable, it will alleviate that dependence over time.

Renewable energy is the large scale, the smaller scale is something that’s more accessible, but will more than likely take a longer period of time to accomplish. A general change in attitude and lifestyle is never an easy thing to pitch to people, but that is exactly the type of mindset that will ultimately create a lasting change with green initiatives.

Recycling, public transportation, “greener” transportation — biking, walking, fuel efficient vehicles, paper-less initiatives are all small steps, but the more people who are committed to these things and other ideas, the larger influence. Raising awareness about leading a less wasteful way of life is a great start, but it has to be perpetual in order to make lasting change.

IzzitGreen:Word on the street is that Izzit has been jamming to your music! How do you feel about being the first IzzitGreen Artist in Residence?

TRMJ: Awesome, that’s great to hear! You know, my career has taken me so many places and I’ve been blessed to have met so many amazing people along the way. From the loyal fans that come to every single show when I’m in their city and download every song and album the minute they’re released, to the incredible people at IzzitGreen who do so much to raise awareness that GREEN IS GOOD and help open people’s eyes to see the bigger picture. I’ve learned so much from Izzit already, and I look forward to sharing that knowledge as a frontline ambassador for green. If Izzit plays an instrument, let me know, while I’ve had the honor of sharing the stage with some amazing performers, I can honestly say that I’ve never jammed with a dwarf Sasquatch!

My goals as an IzzitGreen Artist in Residence are to raise awareness about the resources available to other musicians to support green initiatives and to encourage a more public knowledge of renewable energy sources, what they are, where their potential lies. I’d also love to develop and foster relationships with active users in the IzzitGreen community to create new opportunities to play festivals, fund raisers, corporate events and parties that are ultimately centered around “being green.” Last, I encourage feedback from the community as far as what I can do to better contribute to causes and be a more mindful and proactive greener artist myself.

Ever play drums to “Tom Sawyer” from the rock icons Rush or “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins? If so, that’s music to Pro-Mark’s ears.

Since the late 1950s, Pro-Mark has been the leading innovator and manufacturer of drumsticks, mallets and percussion products to touring musicians, students and amateurs. From their world headquarters in Houston, Pro-Mark ships to 110 countries and, even in a down economy, business is good.

What’s impressive about Pro-Mark — besides outstanding products, personalized service and an artist roster that reads like a Who’s Who of the music industry — is their zero-waste manufacturing process. From raw materials to finished goods, the only waste in the process — small wooden plugs along with wood dust and shavings — are recycled to local businesses for further use.

Additionally, the hickory and maple wood used is sourced from sustainable forestry areas in the Southeastern United States. According to Pat Brown, vice president of worldwide sales, “The hickory and maple we use here at Pro-Mark is growing at a rate faster than we can harvest.” And their signature Shira Kashi White Oak is government controlled.

Recycling is part of the Pro-Mark culture. Not only is the manufacturing process green – their goal is to use recycled material whenever possible — but they also try to be green with the finished sticks. Mallets, for instance, don’t typically suffer the abuse of traditional sticks, which are prone to nicks, scratches and breakage. Instead, the tips and mallet heads can be replaced or rewoven and put back into service in bands, symphonies and drum corps.

Great products and innovation in design and manufacturing, coupled with sustainable materials and zero-waste manufacturing. Pro-Mark = Good Green stuff for everyone.

Consider three events: In January 1981 at the Winter Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, electronics companies announced future looking products known as the “camcorder,” the “compact disc player” and the Commodore VIC-20, the predecessor to the flashy Commodore 64. Four months later, on May 11, Jamaican national treasure Bob Marley passed away at the age of 36. Now jump forward 30 years to January 2011 when an upstart consumer electronics brand bearing the name House of Marley announced a full line of earphones, earbuds and iPod docks at CES 2011.

Let’s not dwell on the irony that the man who died that year is still culturally important, while “the future” represented by the baubles launched at Winter CES 1981 have long since suffered their demise at the hands of iPhones, HD Flips and Honeycomb tablets. Instead, let’s start more simply, as in: Bob Marley branded headphones? Seriously? What would Bob think of that?

About the Products & Brand

Before diving into the deep end of this philosophical pool, some details about the brand and its products may be helpful. For starters, the brand’s mission in their own words:

To create a better world and spread Bob Marley’s vision of one love, one world through eco-conscious products that embody the values of equality, unity, authenticity, charity and sustainability, all while giving back to the people and planet

Marley further defines the brand’s mission by calling-out four key production principles: Superior quality, sustainably sourced, cause-minded and waste conscious. With product inputs like Forest Stewardship Council-certified hardwoods, recyclable aluminum components, hemp cord wraps and recycled packaging, Marley seems to be on solid eco footing. The brand also supports a number of non-profit causes, including the 1Love movement, Charity: Water and the African Leadership Academy.

Hopefully production quality, sound and overall design of the products meet the brand’s quality commitments, but Marley designers made sure to include a range of the best features you’d expect from great headphones, including inline/on-cord controls and comfy padding on headphones.

If first impressions count, Marley’s onto a winner. Every product in the line looks unique, well-built, designerly and sexy. The iPod docks are alternately sleek and rugged, the earbuds range from cute to slick to chic, and the over-the-ear headphones range from grungy to sophisticated. Despite the stylistic range though, the products hang together as a coherent product line with prices to match the different folks likely to buy them. Prices range from $30 to $100 for earbuds, $60 to $300 for headphones and $50 to $500 for the range of docks. Bottom line: There’s something for everyone.

House of Marley is currently taking pre-orders for the products, though no specific shipping target has been given. When they do, Izzit will try to get hand-on with them for a full review.

So What Would Bob Think?

Guessing what a long-deceased iconoclast would think means striding onto dangerous ground. Add the passion with which many people revere Marley, the “controversy” of his political beliefs, the current state of our socio-political climate, the simple incongruity of “consumer electronics brand Marley” and the massive technological leaps made in the 30 years since Marley passed, and the predictor will almost certainly make an absurd and anger-inducing prediction. Right?

Then again, look at it this way: We live in a world where deceased anti-Babylonian (aka anti-western capitalism/imperialism) music star Bob Marley is competing with Sony to sell us headphones for our 4G mobile smart phones, on which we’ll store hundreds of apps, stream thousands of songs, and use Google to find all manner of things in “the cloud,” including HD movies that our Netflix prediction algorithm and social media “friends”’ forgot to suggest for us. So anything’s possible. In that spirit, here goes.

How Could He Not Despise the Idea?

House of Marley must be considered in the context of Marley’s core passions — namely human rights, personal freedom and anti-imperialism — and specifically through the lens of African and Caribbean cultures. While some argue that important progress has been made in these areas, it’s unlikely Marley would agree. He’d be sickened to know of how little progress has been made since his death.

Marley would most certainly define the failed states of Africa and the Caribbean, the West’s “War on Terror” and the anti-scientific rhetoric against climate change as troubling symptoms of relentless imperial interest. All of this would horrify him, though it most certainly wouldn’t surprise him.

As a child of the fifties and sixties, and as a musician, Marley clearly believed in the power of artistic messages to educated and force social change. He’d hate that we’ve not used the “democratizing power” of the Internet and other technologies to drive more improvements in the human condition.

Moreover, he’d likely recognize that the accelerated pace of technological change and rampant consumerism in the West have contributed to both the continued subjugation of the developing world and the selfish disinterest of the developed world citizenry. He’d see our gadgets and tech baubles as the enabling narcotics of a negligently complicit public. Given all of this, Bob would certainly despise the idea of using his name to hawk electronics.

Right? Maybe not.

Ask Yourself These Questions

Did Bob Marley understand that rock/popular music was the medium of his day, and best way to give reach to his voice and amplify his message was by partnering with the record industry and the “corporate system” it used to distribute both? Did he accept the inherent conflict of that union as necessary to spreading his message? Did he believe that he could maintain his idealistic footing within that imperfect arrangement by adhering to his core principles? Do you think he saw the idealistic concession as worthwhile?

Has there been a popular artist who better understood or employed the power of symbol to express his message? To this day, spliffs, dreads and the green-yellow-red of Haile Selassie’s lion king flag all evoke Marley first. Would Marley recognize his enduring resonance throughout the world as a function of the symbolism he cultivated?

Despite his likely trouble with consumer culture, would he see how the modern deluge of information has fragmented the mass audience and created a connected soup of social media, memes and “brand me” in its place? Would he understand that in many senses the strongest cultural symbolism of our day is “branding?”

More importantly, would Marley agree that the packaging of product, process and message developed by House of Marley is closely equivalent to the combination of music, lifestyle and message he lived? Viewed this way, using brand Marley to produce great products the “right” way and in support of a bigger cause seems like an exceptional way to lead by example and extend Marley’s principles.

To be sure, we’ll never know if Bob Marley would like the House of Marley concept, though the best indication that he would may lie in the fact that members of his family are behind the product line, and the 1Love is involved in the development. And if Marley’s family believes he’d support the brand, then that’s might just be all the evidence the rest of us need.

Hopefully the brand lives up to its promise and the memory of its namesake, but as we all know, only time will tell . . .
