Spring is such a tease. Warmer weather is on the way, but it’s not quite time to put the whole winter wardrobe into storage just yet. Thankfully, the one thing that can go is that heavy bulky winter coat; time to replace it with something that doesn’t make you break into sweat every time you walk more than ten yards!
This spring sees the coming of age of the boyfriend blazer. Oversized or straight fitted, these classy little numbers will last you all the way into summer. Wear them wrapped up tight with a belt to keep the wind out, or roll up the sleeves and let it hang loose and easy when the sun decides to show its face.
All of these jackets are sustainably sourced and reasonably priced, so they won’t put your conscience or your purse out of joint! Keep reading →

With the close of the Winter Olympics yesterday, I wanted to draw your attention to one of the coolest style stories that I learned about during the Games.
Roots is a clothing company that’s based firmly in Canada. It’s not an official sponsor of the games this year, although it has been in the past. There’s been a bit of controversy over the fact that the company has promoted patriotic athletic wear over the last few months, apparently in an attempt to conduct ambush marketing, but that’s all by-the-by in this story.

One of the best things about buying t shirts is how fun it is. Here are a few of our favourite eco-tees on the site. Clockwise we have: California Rising’s Mind Over Matter, Topo Ranch’s W’s Spray and Saddle Up tees, Andira’s Rainforest Tee and PartyBot’s Little Timmy Tee.
T-shirts haven’t always been the pinnacle of fashion that they are today. They were first made ‘cool’ back in the 1950’s when actors such as Marlon Brando and James Dean started wearing them as regular clothes, a layer or two above their traditional position as underwear. Suddenly, they became a symbol of sex, irreverence and rebellion. Ever since, tees have been a popular means of conveying a personal message, whether political, humorous or downright cool. First Up, The Lowdown:
The word ‘pajama’ (or ‘pyjama’) was imported from the Hindustani language and comes from the word Payjama, which literally translates as ‘leg garment’. Pajamas first became popular in the West during the British colonial era in the 19th Century. Although men started wearing pajamas as nightwear, it wasn’t long before more elegant examples- made from silk and richly coloured cotton, were worn as general loungewear.
It took until about 1920 for the trend to catch on with women. Coco Chanel’s lounging pajamas transformed popular opinion and the fashion took off in a big way. These days, pajamas are used to describe just about anything from full length jacket and trouser nightwear through to clothes for relaxing. Keep reading →

This year’s Fall New York Fashion Week was preceded by the announcement that it would be a carbon neutral event. In partnership with Tetra Pak, the event, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, has earned the trusted badge of CarbonNeutral®. Although it’s inspiring to see an international event by definition at the zenith of ‘trend setting’ putting carbon emissions front and centre, there are a couple of questions that need thrashing out first: Keep reading →

Ecoist is a company that creates and sells eco-friendly items primarily made from discarded product labels which are then recycled and turned into fashionable, functional and fun products that create conversation and look pretty neat too. Unlike some eco-friendly fashion companies, Ecoist doesn’t want people to buy their items just because they’re eco-friendly, they want them to buy them because they follow trends you’d see on celebrities or on the runways, AND they have the added bonus of minimal environmental impact. Wouldn’t you like to pick up a purse and be able to say, “it’s just like Victoria Beckham’s, but mine didn’t require a mortgage or take away a piece of my soul and morality because of it’s environmental impact”? Many clothing and other companies use plants and animals as the logo for their product, for some, there is meaning behind it, for others, it simply represents the brand. Save Your Logo is a company that is encouraging these organizations to do good through the sale of their products, and it asks them to support the animals the help bring them profit and success. Save Your Logo works with these companies to help them filter some of their proceeds into non-profit organizations that help support their cause. Keep reading →

It can be hard to be eco-minded when you’re staring at a big, sparkly piece of bling that’s calling your name, but, when you’re choosing rings that are going to solidify your wedding vows; why not choose jewelry that has minimal environmental impact so that the world as you know if might be around for a little while longer after you say “I do”.
Between the conflict that comes with diamond mining and acquisition, and the toll that gold mining has upon the environment; not to mention the conditions that the miners work in, risking their lives for the sake of a commodity that primarily becomes a status symbol, there are many strings attached to jewelry. Sure it looks nice, but once you have nowhere to wear it because the world as you know it is long gone due to environmental degradation, it really won’t do you much good. Yes, I’m being melodramatic; and yes, it’s true that one set of wedding rings isn’t going to make the difference between environmental soundness and complete destruction. But every little bit counts, and while one purchase may not seem like it’s on a large scale, think about everyone else who has the same attitude. Keep reading →

Sometimes products that come from recycled goods are the ones that are the most unique, even great conversation starters among friends and family who see something in your home or on your person that they fall and love with and want to know where you got it. The best part about purchasing these unique items is that even if you tell them where you got it from, they’ll never be able to copy your fashion or your home décor choices in their entirety because they are one of a kind. An example of a fashion item that when your friends ask, you can say “Haha, you can’t have it!” is the Recycled Maps Square Beads Necklace by the Recycled Planet Store. Keep reading →
