When the weather turns warmer, it often turns wetter. A waterproof, breathable shell can keep you dry inside and out. The days of sweaty rubber rain gear are gone, as new technologies allow fabrics to release heat, by allowing moist air to pass through the material, but only moving inside to out. So body moisture escapes, and rain water beads and rolls off the shell. This way, you stay comfortable and dry, on the inside, and outside of the jacket. Technology has also allowed manufacturers to make rain gear more environmentally friendly with less toxic water repellent coatings, and fabrics made from recycled materials. These versatile and green hard shells work great as backpacking companions, lightweight ski jackets, or everyday wear.

Don’t let the rain stop you from getting out and enjoying the great outdoors this spring. Here are some suggestions for an eco-friendly, breathable rain jacket:

Patagonia is a company at the forefront of environmentally conscious business, and luckily for us, they also make a high-quality, breathable, and green solution to spring downpours. Patagonia’s Storm Light Jacket is fully waterproof, thanks to its polytetrafluoroethene (PTFE)-free coating. It is also fully breathable, so you won’t get clammy when putting forth some effort. And added features like a 100% recycled polyester mesh lining, 100% recycled polyester taffeta hood lining and 100% recycled polyester brushed-jersey collar lining, make this jacket both comfortable and eco-friendly. It is also recyclable through Patagonia’s Common Threads Recycling Program.

Check out the Men’s and Women’s versions.

Another coat to don when the weather turns rainy is the Cyclone Eco Jacket by Sierra Designs. This waterproof shell is made from 100% recycled polyester, with a solvent-free laminate. In addition, the jacket boasts taped PVC-free seams for full protection. Underarm vents and a super breathable material allow the shell to release heat when needed. The slight stretch allows for great range of movement and the coat feels great when zipped all the way up thanks to the fleecy material behind the neck and at the chin. Beyond their products, the Sierra Designs headquarters in Boulder, CO is wind-powered to keep the company’s environmental footprint as small as possible.

The Cyclone Eco is available in Men’s and Women’s Models.

Or how about the Shelter Jacket by Nau? This 3-layer waterproof shell is made from 100% recycled polyester, from the face to the backing to the trim, which can also be recycled at the end of its life. A simple but beautiful jacket that looks as good in the rain of London as it does in the rain of the PCT. And for each product sold Nau will donate 2% of the sale to one of their partners for change of your choosing, in addition to their annual “Grants for Change”, given to an individual or small group working for positive change. Nau also purchases carbon offsets for their shipping and provides free public transportation for their employees.

Being so caught up in face products as of late, I’ve completely neglected the other 90% of my skin. No doubt this is due to an attempt to cover and forget about every last bit of exposed skin these winter months. I can’t promise this mistake won’t happen again, but I do promise to point out some pretty spectacular, earth friendly body moisturizers from a few green cosmetic companies.

Suki Winter Skin Hydration Kit: The Ultimate 100% Natural Moisture Package

The Suki Winter Skin Hydration Kit fights winter dryness while providing all over skin nourishment with natural, clean and organic ingredients. This kit covers all the bases with a butter cream healing salve for hands, a velvet moisturizing cream for your body, and lip repair butter for smackers. And to tie everything together, well package, this hydration kit comes with a 100% organic cotton sateen travel case. My favorite thing about Suki though, besides their adorable travel cases, is their choice to pack their products in glass, not plastic, and cartons made of recycled stock using clean, vegetable based inks. Oh, and the part where none of their products sold through Beautorium are tested on animals.

Origins Precipitation: The Lazy Moisturizer

Origins Precipitation body lotion is for those who want to keep it simple with one hard-core lotion to use all over, all year round. I actually discovered this lotion at an Origins store one summer in Connecticut and continued to use it year round – yes, it combats northern NY winters quite well. One thing that keeps me from buying this all the time is the price, although it really does last longer than other lotions, and not just because it comes in a huge bottle. One pump is all you need for total body coverage. Plus, with an ingredients list of Sunflower and Soybean Oils, Ginseng, Aloe, Gentian Root, Clary Sage, Barley and Phellodendron Extracts, how could not want to slather this bad boy all over?

Melvita Argan Oil: The Hot Tub Goers

Argan Oil was recommended to a friend of mine after complaints of dry skin after hot tub dips. He was in serious need of some all over moisture and determined to get an earth friendly solution – Melvita Argan Oil fills both shoes. Melvita Argan Oil is rich in essential fatty acids that you can use on your face, body, hair or nails, but is also ideal in protecting skin and hair from premature ageing. Argan tree kernals, the source for Melvita Argan Oil, have been harvested for centuries for their many health and beauty uses. All of Melvita’s products are certified by ECOCERT, France’s leading organic certification organization. Sold through Beautorium, Melvita’s products are not tested on animals.

Go ahead, wrap yourself in one of these earth friendly body treats – who said you couldn’t have spa like skin all year round?

Traveling with a toddler is not the easiest thing in the world. You need lightweight, versatile gear, plenty of snacks, and LOTS of distractions. In your haste to prevent airport and airplane freakouts, you might forget to make eco-conscious choices. We’re here to help, with the essential green kit for traveling with toddlers.

1. Want to carry a squirming 25-plus-pound child (what feels like) several miles to your departure gate? No? Then you’re going to need a foldable lightweight stroller. This one contains no lead, phthalates or PVC. It stores upright for easy gate-checking.

2. Staying at child-free friends’ or family members’ house? Bring a portable high chair. Choose one that folds down small when you’re not using it, and attaches to a table rather than standing on its own legs, otherwise it’ll be impossible to carry easily. Make sure any plastic on the high chair is listed as being BPA- and phthalate-free, and that any paint on steel frames is non-toxic.

3. Need a clean, green surface to change diapers while traveling, and don’t trust the cleanliness of the airplane changing table? Check out the Kalencom Quick Change Kit. It folds out into a changing pad, and includes a wipes case. There are two pockets to store fresh diapers, or dirty ones if you use cloth or aren’t near a trashcan. Kalencom kits are colored with AZO-free dye, and their easy-to-clean plastic surfaces are phthalate-free.

4. Wipes are essential, not only for changing diapers and cleaning food-covered faces, but also for cleaning potentially grimy surfaces your toddler will touch, such as the airplane tray table. Don’t bring separate cleaning wipes: make your regular baby wipes do double duty, and you’ll save room in your carry-on bag. Choose alcohol- and chlorine-free wipes, and if you and your toddler like scented wipes, try to ensure the fragrance comes from essential oils rather than chemicals.

5. Spill, diaper accident or other toddler-related mess? Cloth diaper user? (Bravo for keeping sposies out of the landfill!) You’ll need a wet bag to store soiled clothes or used diapers. These waterproof bags separate dirty or wet things from the rest of the items in your diaper bag or carry-on bag. Some are made of water-resistant polyurethane-lined fabric, which makes them non-biodegradable. However, PUL fabric is safe, and it’s still better to use these bags than to use plastic and toss it away, especially if you’re traveling and might not have a place to recycle a plastic bag. Wet bags are machine-washable and can be used many times, so even if you’ve got one that’s made of PUL fabric, you’re being more eco-conscious than if you stored dirty items in a paper or plastic sack. This being said, make sure you pick a wet bag that’s PVC-free.

6. Worried the little one will go stir-crazy on the plane? Stock up on some new books and toys. Parental wisdom dictates that if your toddler hasn’t seen or played with something before, it’s more likely to hold his or her interest. You don’t have to buy new things: arrange a toy and book swap with a parent of a similar-aged kid. If you do decide to hit the toy store, try to find books printed on recycled paper – even better, choose books about recycling and being kind to the earth! Toy-wise, pick up stuff that will fit easily in your carryon, and that can be used over and over again. Try the Aquadoodle, a water-based drawing tablet that saves paper by featuring two reusable drawing surfaces. Sprig Toys, Haba, Melissa and Doug, and Plan Toys are just a few of the most environmentally conscious, kid-safe toy brands on the market today.

7. Exhausted upon arrival at your destination? Put Junior to bed, and relax with a nice glass of sustainably grown wine. You deserve it.

Last week, Renee told us which organic products can keep our skin looking and feeling good in the harsh winter weather. Kids and babies have a special set of needs when it comes to their skin. Kids need good sun protection (especially if they’re old enough to go skiing or snowboarding), and plenty of hydration (especially if they’re spending lots of time indoors in a heated house). Babies need healing ointment to protect little butts from diaper rash, especially if those little butts are wrapped in layers of winter clothes – while cozy thermals trap heat, they can also trap moisture, making rashes more likely. And every little one needs bug protection. Wait, what? Bugs? In the winter? Yup – don’t forget that, for half of our planet, it’s actually summer right now: Australia and South Africa, for example, are just hitting their peak annual temperatures. Natural insect repellent is perfect for keeping babies bite-free safely.

The Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep cosmetic database is a great place to look up skin products before you buy them. It tells you what chemicals to avoid when choosing products, and why they’re bad. There’s a section of the site that deals specifically with children’s cosmetic products. TruKid Happy Face and Body Lotion received a rating of 2, or “low hazard,” from the EWG: it’s nontoxic, contains no artificial fragrances or colors, and moisturizes the skin with shea and cupuacu butter. You can use it on little ones’ wind-chapped noses and cheeks, or on dry elbows and knees: it’s good for face and body. After your baby’s bath, try putting lotion on his or her skin while it’s still slightly damp, to seal in moisture. (Don’t do this when you’re putting on diaper cream, though: let the area dry first.)

Speaking of diaper cream, it’s essential to find a good one – your baby’s skin will thank you. Some creams soothe and protect, but they do it by using chemicals like BHA, sodium borate and parabens. BHA is a fragrance-masking ingredient that has been known to cause skin depigmentation, and is also linked to cancer. Sodium borate and boric acid are antimicrobial and pH-adjusting ingredients that cosmetic-industry authorities say aren’t safe for infants’ skin. Parabens are used as preservatives, and have been linked to cancer and hormone problems. Triple Paste diaper cream gets an excellent EWG rating of 1. It contains zinc oxide and lanolin, and creates a protective coating against moisture while healing irritated skin. Take it from me: this stuff really works, and fast. It’s always healed my son’s rashes within two days.

Whether it’s the height of summer or deep in winter, the sun can burn you and your little ones. Keep babies under 6 months old out of the sun: sunscreen can irritate their skin, and it’s just not safe for them to be unprotected. For bigger kids, choose sunscreens with UVA and UVB protection. Avoid products containing oxybenzone: it’s a hormone disruptor, and sunlight can cause it to produce allergenic and carcinogenic chemicals. Paradoxically, sunshine can also break down sunscreen, making it ineffective and letting UV rays through to the skin. Mustela Bebe SPF 50 lotion is photostable, meaning it doesn’t degrade in the sun.

And now for our readers in the Southern Hemisphere: Eco-friendly bug repellent for babies and kids! California Baby makes a natural insect-repelling lotion that contains citronella, cedar and lemongrass essential oils. It’s great when you’re keeping baby out of the sun, but still want to lounge together outside in a shady spot without being eaten alive. It’s also good for evening playtime and alfresco dinners. Plus, it contains aloe vera and Vitamin E oil, making it perfect for rehydrating the skin after spending all day in the sun. Northern Hemisphere-dwellers, remember this product when your summertime rolls back around! California Baby also makes a sunscreen with citronella for combined UV protection and bug repellent.

I’m jealous of my son’s gorgeous complexion: baby skin is amazingly soft and clear. To keep it that way, treat it well – use lotions, sunscreen and bug repellent with natural, non-toxic, skin-nourishing ingredients – and it’ll be beautiful for years to come.

An exploration of some of the cool uses for recycled glass in our homes and gardens.

This week I delved into the plethora of products made of recycled glass, and I was seriously impressed by what I found. Glass is a material that can be recycled infinitely. It is comprised of silica, the main component of sand, and I have learned that one application for recycled glass material is that it is being tested as a material to “replenish” beaches that have been worn down by erosion. I guess that is the ultimate back to nature approach. Glass is a stable, non-toxic material that can be used in a multitude of forms. It has great insulating properties and can be used to create amazing art forms. There are a lot of uses for recycled glass throughout the home and garden, I have selected a few to discuss below.

Recycled glass first becomes “cullet,” or crushed glass. When making new products from cullet, 40 percent less energy is consumed in place of making glass from new products, because it melts at a lower temperature than virgin ingredients. ~ Earth 911

In some cases, the glass doesn’t need be melted to find another use. These cool countertops (and floors!) were made by mixing crushed glass into an eco-friendly resin. So instead of trucking in rare marble from across the globe, there is a funky use for all of those broken mirrors. A few companies that manufacture these countertops, wall panels and floors are EnviroGLAS, Vetrazzo and Curava. I love the variety of colors and the ability to mix and match between the aggregate composition and the resin (or concrete) color, it definitely lends itself to some creative home decorating solutions!

If you are looking for a departure from the ordinary in your landscaping pursuits, there are several companies that offer tumbled glass as a weed-prevention (mulch alternative) material. It is available in a large variety of colors and can also be used in other applications such as Koi ponds. There is even a product, GrowStone, that will improve the performance of your potted plants. GrowStone is a eco-friendly alternative to perlite and pumice (both strip-mined materials) that is made from 99% recycled bottles.

For every six tons of recycled container glass used, a ton of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is reduced. A relative 10% increase in cullet reduces particulates by 8%, nitrogen oxide by 4%, and sulfur oxides by 10%. ~ Glass Packaging Institute

Glass is widely used for its insulation properties, and there are a number of companies and associations that are trying to utilize as much recycled glass as possible. Insulation takes many forms, from the traditional batting we are familiar with to tiny glass beads that can be added to construction materials to increase their powers of insulation. Most standard home insulation has about 30% of recycled fiberglass content, and manufacturers are looking to increase that percentage.

This is just the tip of the iceberg on the possible applications of post-consumer glass. As there are so many recycled glass products available, be sure to ask retailers and manufacturers about the recycled content in glass goods. As consumers we have a powerful voice in advocating for sustainability through our buying practices. I’m sure I’ll be blogging on this topic again as there are so many cool products made from recycled glass!

In the words of Dr. Seuss, whose birthday happens to be today, “It is fun to have fun, But you have to know how.” What great advice! And even better, what great logic to apply to one’s shopping habits. Personally I like fun stuff, simple as that, but what I really, really enjoy is fun, sustainable stuff! So in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, and his rather thought provoking writings, I’ve put together a little list of fun, bold and sustainable make-up for you to check out.

The Bold, Rebellious, Edgy Look

For creating bold, rebellious, edgy looks I found a clever little make-up kit by Bare Escentuals: bareMinerals Tutorials – Rocker Eye. This funky little eye kit instructs you, in simple steps, on how to achieve a rocker eye make-up style. The detachable tip card is the perfect cheat sheet. And you can feel good creating intense, feminine, rocker chick eyes with a product formulated without parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, petro-chemicals, or phthalates. You can check this kit out at Ulta Beauty, and while your there check out it’s reviews – “Simply smashing” to “Love it”. Not a bad rap for a little rocker eye fun.

The Famous Smoky Eye

If the rocker eye look isn’t your style, Bare Escentuals also makes bareMinerals Tutorials – Smoky Eye. This make-up kit was formulated to create the famous going out smoky eye look. Just like the Rocker Eye, Smoky Eye comes with a detachable tip card that makes the perfect cheat sheet. Bare Escentuals has created a one-of-a-kind, patent-pending brush with a fresh color pairing of bareMinerals for this look. The only bummer, reviews on this one aren’t as high as Rocker Eye. So if you were between the two, I would go with Rocker Eye.

For the Indecisive Shopper

A great solution for an indecisive shopper, or make-up queen into different looks, is Urban Decay’s Sustainable Shadow Box. This box holds ten of Urban Decays best selling eye shadows, a cruelty-free eye shadow brush, and a travel size bottle of eye shadow primer. The eye shadows are arranged in coordinating duos, but can be mixed to provide an endless combination of looks. You can apply the shadows wet or dry with the help of their cruelty-free brush. The lacquered case is bamboo, the eye shadows are nestled in a tray made of recycled paper, and the clear outer PET box is recyclable. The only con with this product (and believe me it’s a big one) is the difficulty in figuring out what is in the shadows ingredient wise. The box itself is a pretty nice green catch, but the lack of shadow ingredients gets you thinking. Although they do claim to have very few binders that generally contain some gnarly stuff. And if you aren’t into a bit of sparkle and shimmer, this shadow box probably isn’t for you.

Wipe That Make-Up Away

At the end of the day you can wipe that make-up away with a pre-moistened Pomegranate Cleansing & Make-Up Removing Wipe by Korres. This is a pretty sweet (yes, you can’t get out of here without one pun) wipe that will remove dirt, make-up and oil from your face and eyes while refreshing your skin. These wipes also eliminate impurities, tighten pores, and offer antioxidant protection. And on top of that, Korres is always formulated without parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes, petro-chemicals, phthalates, GMO, and triclosan. Not bad for a little clean up action. So in the words of the great Dr Seuss, please keep in mind, “It is fun to have fun, But you have to know how.”

Many green options cost more than their replaced product – but the SodaStream Soda Maker offers a wealth of eco and health benefits for cheaper than buying sparkling water and soft drinks the old fashioned way. So you’ll be improving your health, keeping tons of plastic out of landfills and saving money instead of lugging heavy bottles of future trash home from the market.

Some SodaStream Background

As a fan of all things that bubble, from champagne to sparkling water to soda (does beer count?), I’ve found it increasingly difficult to enjoy these great things due the myriad of challenges the conscious consumer faces when looking at purchasing these products. These range from the health impact on you and your family (hey, only 33 grams of fructose corn syrup in most major single serving soda cans!), to the environmental impact that millions of plastic bottles of mineral water and the impact of transporting mineral water from some remote part of the globe to your favorite posh restaurant table.

So how does one get past all of this and enjoy the bubbles? Enter a product that has been around for some time that is enjoying a well deserved renaissance, the SodaStream Soda Maker.

For starters, the SodaStream is fun – like a kitchen-based science experiment you can drink. By attaching the one liter bottle of tap water and with three swooshes had like magic created a carbonated soda. Secondly, the drink you create is far healthier than anything they would have purchased at the supermarket because we controlled the flavoring or sugar that was added. As an added parental benefit, my kids no longer considered me the Dr. No of soda. Thirdly it saves money – lots of money. Sodas and Mineral Water are expensive, and since folks tend to drink lots of both, the cost adds-up. We estimate that we will save over $200 per year by using the Soda Stream Soda Maker.

The SodaStream is also practically guiltless from an environmental perspective. Although many water beverage bottlers have reduced the amount of plastic they use in their bottles, and promote recycling campaigns for the rest. Disposable water bottles remain a plague on our waste stream. A study by the US Recycling Institute estimated that as recently as 2005 more than 80% of bottles in the US do not get recycled and end up in landfills. Not to mention the estimated 4.7 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions were produced in the process of replacing the 134 billion bottles and cans that were not recycled that year. With the SodaStream product you can essentially do away with having to buy those bottles at all, and the company reuses each CO2 cartridge over and over again.

All the models of the Soda Stream Soda Makers are small and sleek (our’s is called and looks like a robotic Penguin!). It has quickly become a conversation piece in our house. The prices range from $89.95 to $200.00 and there are accessories and supplies that you can order if you chose to use their soda recipes. The company estimates the overall cost of each bottle of sparkling water or soda to be about $0.30.

So drink up and enjoy the bubbles, the savings, and the parental kudos with the knowledge that your new fashioned way are doing good for the health of both your family and the planet. And if all that’s not rewarding enough, try using your new fashioned SodaStream to make yourself an Old Fashioned like your man Don Draper…

I’m guessing a few Canadian hockey fans were out celebrating last night (hint, hint: Sunday’s gold medal game). And if you throw in the Canadian Women’s Hockey team also taking the gold, that’s some solid partying time. So for those of you that barely slept a wink as the Olympic games game to a close, I have a few green tricks up my sleeve that will get you back in work mode, well looking like you are in work mode anyways…

Rejuvenate and Firm Your Eye Area

To rejuvenate and firm your eye area, hydrate with the fragrance free formula of Weleda Wild Rose Intensive Eye Cream from Beautorium. Euphrasia soothes tired and strained eyes while Organic Rosehip Oil and Orpine help to diminish wrinkles and reduce puffiness. Specially formulated for the delicate eye area, you can use this day or night.

Feel free to feel good about fixing your puffies with this product. Weleda is a pretty neat company that aims to recognize beauty, but above that they aim to actively cultivate beauty. This is accomplished through biodynamic farming methods, in addition to the development of fair trade partnerships. Plus, Weleda grows over 300 certified organic Demeter ingredients in it’s own biodynamic gardens around the world. Their products are certified natural by the BDIH (the Association of German Industries and Trading Firms for pharmaceuticals, health care products, food supplements and personal hygiene products), and Weleda USA helped pioneer the new NPA (Natural Products Association) USA standard together with Burt’s Bees. Not to shabby, eh?

Keep the Water Coming

If you chose to engage in the above-mentioned celebratory lifestyle, you can’t skip out on the water. Water keeps your skin hydrated, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Not to mention water improves circulation and blood flow, all of which keep skin radiant. Aim for eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day (yes water, not Molson), and a few more glasses if you throw in a night or two out.

Free Face Fixes

Don’t forget about free face fixes. I’ve been told that crushed up ice in a washcloth can be applied to under eyes to instantly reduce eye puffiness. Not bad for a little frozen water and cloth.

Now this week don’t disregard your beauty rest. When it comes down to it, nothing beats a good night of sleep.

So, you have decided to kick that nasty bottled water habit? Good for you! I’m sure you already know about the huge environmental impact of the bottled water industry, like the more than 1.5 million barrels of oil that are used to make bottled water each year. Or maybe that 90% of plastic water bottles end up in landfills, instead of being recycled. But, have you also heard some of the many benefits of drinking tap water? Most tap water in the U.S. is as safe or safer than bottled water, which makes sense considering that 40% of all bottled water is just filtered tap water! Haven’t you ever wondered what the “Municipal Source” or “Community Water System” labels mean on your bottled water? Yup, filtered tap water. So what if I told you that you could make this same bottled water, at your home or on the go, save money, and drastically decrease your environmental footprint? Here are some of my favorites that use high-end carbon water filters to clean tap water of chlorine, iodine and other bad tasting chemicals while you drink!

Can’t live life without your Nalgene? No worries, try a TapGaurd by Guyot Designs. This nifty little device is made from Food-grade silicone rubber and snaps nicely into most wide-mouth water bottles. If you already own a reusable water bottle this little guy is great because it uses much less material overall than a new bottle. As a company, Guyot Designs also runs a carbon offset program. Using this program they purchase more carbon offsets than they actually produce, making the TapGaurd a “carbon negative” product. Every TapGuard carries enough carbon offsets to account for more than 50 lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions reductions, which you can even verify with your product serial number on their website.

And for those of you who are hooked on stainless steel for your water holder, we have something for you too. EcoUsable partnered with the Algalita Marine Research Foundation to create the first stainless steel filtered water bottle, the Ech2o. The Ech2o is made with 304 grade stainless steal which is highly corrosion resistant, sanitary and easy to clean. The steel also won’t leach, and is not lined with a dangerous coating like many aluminum bottles. And with a non-slip base and a surprising light weight, it is easy to love.

Maybe you’re not planning on hiking the Appalachian Trail, or driving over your water bottle with your car, but sexy is a must. It can’t get much sexier than the Bobble. Designed by Karim Rashid this super-affordable option is more than eye candy. The Bobble is not only recyclable, but actually made from 100% recycled, BPA-free plastic, and produced domestically in the U.S. The Water Bobble comes in 6 attractive colors to match your shoes or your car. And if you need some help remembering, their website will e-mail you when it is time to replace your filter.

With the close of the Winter Olympics yesterday, I wanted to draw your attention to one of the coolest style stories that I learned about during the Games.

Roots is a clothing company that’s based firmly in Canada. It’s not an official sponsor of the games this year, although it has been in the past. There’s been a bit of controversy over the fact that the company has promoted patriotic athletic wear over the last few months, apparently in an attempt to conduct ambush marketing, but that’s all by-the-by in this story.

I want to talk about Roots. As well as having some really great clothes, this company has rock solid green credentials and seems to genuinely go the extra mile when it comes to Corporate Social Responsibility.

Any company that’s honestly considering ‘going green’ could do a lot worse than look at this section of the Roots website to get an idea of what proper green looks like. The company doesn’t only look at the green spec of the clothes that it stocks, it also takes into account everything from the packaging of its suppliers and the carbon footprint of its stores, right through to offsetting any purchase that requires delivery.

It is incumbent on every company and individual to act responsibly and to do what they can to minimize their environmental impact.

Roots doesn’t just talk the talk. As well as taking respectable measures to protect the environment, it recognises that companies have a responsibility to the communities in which they exist and operate. It has a really close relationship with the charity Right To Play, a Toronto based organization with international programs all over the world. The charity has earned widespread respect for its work with disadvantaged children and communities the world over. Roots raises money for the organization with a line of athletic clothing.

‘Right To Play’ was founded by Johann Olav Koss (aka Big Boss Koss), one of the world’s best speed-skaters. His most famous success came in 1994 when he won three gold medals at the Lillehammer Olympics, all with new world records. How fitting then, that Roots has had such a well-recognized presence over the course of these Games in Canada. Over the last couple of weeks, the clothing range has been spotted on some of the biggest names around, including Wayne Gretzky, the man that took the Olympics to Vancouver. We talked last week about the power of the eco-t-shirt and what it means to wear your beliefs on your sleeve. This is the perfect example of that in action.

If the Olympics has left you in an athletic fervor, take a look at our most popular active-wear top and, in particular, our great selection of kit that’s just perfect for winter sports.

(Thanks to Ivan Zuber for the image)
