From Wooden Earphones to Solar Keyboards: IzzitGreen's Top 3 Eco-Gadgets

With the holiday shopping season in full swing, it’s coming down to the wire to think of ideas for your tech savvy friends and family. There’s so much to choose from so how will you pick the right one and stay environmentally conscious? Do they want something practical? Or the latest technology? Or what about just something cool? We at IzzitGreen have made it easy for you to decide.

For the Practical Folks: Fantom GreenDrive

Let’s start with a gift for the practical person on your list. Perhaps it’s Dad or Grandpa, always insisting on products with a purpose. It can’t have any of the bells and whistles that adorn the newer gadgets which only get in the way and cause complications. So, how about getting them a box that sits neatly by their computer that does essentially . . . nothing . . . that is except for storing everything they can think of without taking up space on their computer’s hard drive.

The Fantom GreenDrive offers just that while minimizing their carbon footprint and saving energy in the process. The GreenDrive is a 1 terabyte (which equates to 1,000 gigabytes) external hard drive that can store literally anything. To give you an idea on the amount of available space on this hard drive here’s a quick breakdown: It can store 250,000 photos, 200,000 MP3 formatted songs, or 128 full length DVDs. This one external device alone has the storage capabilities of six and a half laptop computers. Read more »

E-Readers: The Eco Buying Guide

E-Readers: The Eco Buying Guide

Are e-readers really green? Is there a significant difference between e-readers, from the Kindle, the Nook and the iPad when it comes to their environmental cred? Does what kind of reader you are affect what kind e-reader you should get? Yes, yes and yes.

If an e-reader is in your future — or you’re planning on buying one as a gift — IzzitGreen has done some research for you:

Are E-Readers Really Green?

Consensus is that yes, e-readers are indeed a green reading option because of the fact that they do not require the paper and fuel-consuming processing that dead tree books, magazines and newspapers require, plus there are no shipping/packing worries.

A study done by Environmental Science & Technology’s Erika Engelhaupt  found that if one person subscribed to two electronic newspapers instead of buying them in the paper format and purchased 20 e-books that individual would save upwards of 700 pounds of newsprint per year and 20-40 pounds of paper books per year.

The CO2 emissions from a printed newspaper are “up to 140 times more” than their electronic counterparts.

To drive the point home further, Engelhaupt found that a single subscription to The New York Times generates almost 1,500 pounds of CO2 from production to disposal. This is roughly equivalent, Engelhaupt says of “driving 2,000 miles in a car that gets 25 miles per gallon.” Take into account the 1 million plus weekday subscribers to The New York Times, and you can see the environmental toll just in newspaper. Survivalism in the 21st Century: Going Green Means Being Prepared

As the world has become more globalized, we have all become heavily dependent on a well-oiled, seamlessly functioning system to keep our busy lives afloat.  We have become fully reliant on having well stocked stores close by to fulfill our basic necessities and meet our daily needs.  A gap in this highly effective and efficient supply chain of food, water and electricity is but a major natural disaster away.

We have become too comfortable in our own reliance on this system, with many dismissing the need to prepare and store supplies required to keep their family protected in an emergency. The blackout of 2003, Hurricane Katrina and the recent tragic Earthquake in Haiti is a sign for all of us to make our own efforts to prepare for the worst so that in times of need, we have the ability to help others.
