Eco-Snowboards Carve Out a Spot for Niche

Eco-Snowboards Carve Out a Spot for Niche

Sometimes it can be difficult to navigate through the massive monster that is the snowboard marketplace as a rider or a company. Since 2009 Niche snowboards has been steadily carving out its own cubbyhole in the industry. Soon you’ll see why IzzitGreen took some serious notice, for reasons other than Niche’s steller mascot choice.

Based in Salt Lake City, UT Niche Snowboards is set apart from the masses through its complete and ground-up dedication to environmentally friendly construction materials. Niche is on a crusade to de-toxify the snowboard industry and is leading by example with a line of minimal impact snowboards.

Aether

The Aether, for example, is Niche’s answer for the all-mountain freestyle rider. This versatile board has a sustainably harvested poplar core for a mid-stiff flex. It also uses Niche’s Snappy-Sap(TM) bio-resin that, as you might imagine, is made from bio-renewable materials as opposed to the commonplace petroleum-based epoxies. Not only does this resin have a much lower environmental impact, but its incredibly strong bonding ability saves your board from the horror of delamination. Awesome.

Minx

This tricksy Minx park board was made just for the ladies, but don’t worry, no need to be gentle. Niche’s Magma Fiber (TM) is constructed from basalt, which as we all know from seventh grade science class, forms when volcanic lava cools. Magma Fiber (TM) provides a huge improvement over fiberglass. Not only is this magic material stronger, more elastic and lighter, but it is non-toxic, much easier to recycle and avoids the greenhouse gases that are released during fiberglass processing. So start hitting the boxes with this awesome eco-ride, and stop contributing to the bra tree.

Hoodie

Although primarily a hardgoods company, I had to throw in the Niche Hoodie. Available in either a hemp and organic cotton or bamboo and organic cotton blend, these long-fit hoodies are perfect for a little apres board and could even double as a dress for the ladies. The selective vertical branding and thumb holes are details that are as refreshing as they are full of attitude.

So much to say, such little space. So, make sure to check out all of Niche’s ecological know-how on its technologies page. Even though this awesome company is triumphing in its own eco-corner, I can only hope that the rest of the industry will smarten up and follow suit. We are in for a long, snowy winter. Trust me, I have a knack for these things. Time to grab your board (or sticks if that’s your thing) and pray for pow.

Kate’s Organic Bars: Worth Their Weight in the Norwegian Mountains

Kate's Organic Bars: Worth Their Weight in the Norwegian Mountains

Some might call my selection process of items to bring on a backpacking trip slightly “intense”. While packing for an eight day trek through Norway’s Jotunheimen National Park my elimination process followed suit. So, when I decided that I could do without that additional pair of socks, thicker pair of gloves and paperback book to make room for a supply of Kate’s Real Food Organic Energy Bars, it was no small matter. “These better be good,” I thought as I reluctantly threw a favorite pair of wool hiking socks into the “stay” pile. The small space I had created was a perfect fit for the five different flavors of Kate’s Bars that she had generously sent me to review the week before.

After working on an organic farm, company founder Kate Schade made organic a priority that is exemplified in all of her bars. These wholesome treats use all natural and organic ingredients from the honey and fruit to the oats and seeds. Kate offers five distinct flavors but all of the bars share some common characteristics. Every bar utilizes multiple flavors that work together brilliantly. They look a little bit like bird food, but don’t let that deter you. The bars stay together remarkably well and are seemingly uncooked, like no-bake cookies, but they have no problem packing in a satisfying crunch. Each bar is dense and satisfying with energy ranges from a hearty 190 calorie snack to a body-fueling 360 calorie meal bar. The compact bars and fast-acting energy can be perfectly described as fire starter cubes for your body. Here’s my take on each of the flavors.

Grizzly Bar

The Grizzly is one seriously meaty energy bar. You don’t just nibble on the Grizzly. You rip off a chunk and you chew and chomp for a satisfying meal. It’s like Kate made the best gorp ever, and then smashed it into a block the size of a soap bar. The Grizzly has a really nice combination of peanut and fruit flavors, and also makes use of an incredible honey-dark chocolate blending, that leaves a satisfied sweet tooth and a brick of energy ready to burn. Bye-bye Snickers bars.

Tram Bar

The Tram Bar was Kate’s original energy bar and I can see why she decided to launch a business after the reception she must have received for her first try. The Tram bar is another not-messing-around bar that is similar to the Grizzly, however the Tram uses milk instead of dark chocolate. This solid hunk of energy was a most welcome companion during a particularly treacherous ascent early in the trip that involved steep boulder clambering and a pack that seemed all of 30 pounds too heavy. The Tram Bar has smoother, sweeter taste that I preferred, while my boyfriend preferred the dark flavor of the Grizzly. Each to his or her own.

Caz Bar

The Caz was by far the most exotic of the bars. It has this great spicy aftertaste that lingers behind and smells a little bit like Christmas time. The chai tea flavors and sesame seed crunch really make meaningful additions. My boyfriend and fellow critic claimed that the Caz was, “The most original energy bar that I’ve ever tasted.”

Handle Bar

I think that the Handle Bar bar was my least favorite of the lot, but I would guess that my dissatisfaction is almost entirely due to my lack of a real love for cherries. However, if you are a cherry-lover, have I got a treat for you. Kate’s Real Food has done a wonderful job of incorporating high quality cherries into the Handle Bar. We’re not talking about small dried up tart cherries, but full, moist and sweet morsels. The interesting thing about this bar is that the chocolate and cherry flavors really almost mask each other until, BAM! At which point you encounter the pleasant zip of cherry or smooth comfort of chocolate.

Stash Bar

The Stash Bar was my favorite of the five bars that I tried. The Stash packs this awesome sea salt aftertaste that is almost sweet for a very pleasant experience. I really enjoyed the medley of flavors that this bar offers and they all seemed to work together while I still felt like I could taste each and every one. You just have no idea until you try one of these. Seriously.

In the end, after being thoroughly humbled by chain-lined descents, trail running Norwegian high schoolers and white-out conditions I reflected on my initial compromises. In hindsight, it was obvious that I was more than rewarded for my daring sacrificial decisions with originality, perfect flavor synergy and sweet, sweet energy. To Kate’s Real Food bars. Thanks for just being real.

The Amazing, Eco-Friendly, Convertible Shoe!

The Amazing, Eco-Friendly, Convertible Shoe!

Sometimes it takes a little genius construction to come up with a product that can really raise the bar in sustainable design.  It can’t hurt to partner up with one of the most sustainable companies in the shoe business, either. A recent partnership between Timberland and Po-Zu has produced a shoe that busts its butt to eventually get back to where it came from. Originally a slipper company, Po-Zu has come a long way to create beautiful footwear that provides, “maximum comfort – minimum waste”. Through this cradle-to-cradle approach, the Convertible challenges how products are made and where they go when they die.

Convertible

The Convertible includes a hemp, lace-up extension piece that allows it to be worn as a low-cut shoe, or a higher-cut boot. This unique system provides versatility as well as some major style points, but the extension is not the only feature that benefits from the stitching concept. In fact, each piece of the shoe is stitched together instead of glued making the Convertible more breathable, more durable, more repairable and more recyclable.

The sole is made from natural latex which is gently harvested from gum trees using a method that causes no harm or damage to the tree. This material also saves the soles from the garbage bin, as they can be ground up to make new soles at the end of their life. Additionally, the super comfy “foot mattress” is made from coconut husks and actually molds to your foot shape, so you feel just how lightly these shoes tread on the Earth. The leather is tanned using eco-friendly vegetable extracts helping these shoes be so sustainable that if you ever tire of them, you can drop them off at any Timberland store for complete recycling.

However, you might want to keep the compostable shoe box because it makes two awesome seed trays that are biodegradable and perfectly plantable.

Bamboo Skateboards and Eco-Friendly Alternatives

Bamboo Skateboards and Eco-Friendly Alternatives

Eco-friendly transportation comes in many forms. The best of these are powered by my calories; better for me and better for the planet. Most people immediately think of bikes, but for short trips many commuters are finding success with a good, strong deck and some fast spinning wheels. Sidewalk surfers never need to worry about where to park their vehicle or lock up their ride to deter pesky thieves. As eco-friendly skateboard companies look to more sustainable materials and practices, this healthy and blissfully simple transit method is looking greener and greener. Here are five of my favorite eco-friendly and bamboo skateboard companies.

1. Arbor Bamboo and Sustainable Wood Boards

Arbor, recently mentioned in USA Today, has a well deserved reputation for making beautiful and eco-friendly skateboards and longboards using sustainable materials for their decks, trucks and wheels. Sustainably sourced wood and bamboo create a unique mix while recycled glass grip tape, non-toxic water-based finishes, and recycled plastic risers serve up some serious green cred. Check out the Pin Bamboo for a beautiful bamboo longboard.

2. Sk8 Bamboo Boards

Sk8’s signature hybrid decks of 70% bamboo and sustainably sourced Canadian maple have served the company and their consumers well. Sk8 has high hopes of someday completely closing the loop from bamboo tree to discarded decks in their quest for cradle-to-cradle innovation. For a funky short deck, try the Sutsu Freeride.

3. Comet Sustainable Wood Skateboards

Comet manufactures its sustainable poplar and hickory cores in an impressive solar-powered factory in San Francisco. There are no posers here. Comet tirelessly continues to work with manufacturers in a quest to develop greener epoxies and coatings for their products. Graphics wise, I’m loving the FSM (Flying Spaghetti Monster) Longboard.

4. Habitat Eco-Alternative Boards

Habitat displays a wide eco-offering of decks made with hemp-ply and bamboo sealed with recycled plastics and treated with water-based paints, clear coat and glues. Their sustainably harvested cork top decks are a super rad option that eliminates the need for grip tape, and feels great under your favorite kicks.

5. Hendrick Bamboo Boards

Based in sunny California, Hendrick handcrafts maple and bamboo decks with unique artwork painted on the top deck that is visible through clear grip tape. Plus, with a purchase of one of the company’s “boards for barks” products, Hendrick will donate money to support a pet and animal welfare group. I am digging the Laguna Owl Short Board Deck.

So, push off and keep that leg pumping or, if you’re more into my style, find a downhill destination and let the good times fly. Maybe throw in an ollie and catch some air on the way. Air that just might be a little cleaner thanks to these guys.

Eco-Chic Office Wear by Feral Childe

feral-childe-clothing

Who says office wear has to be stuffy and boring? One of my former employers, that’s who. From the man’s style blazers, to the pantyhose in the non-air conditioned office in summer; there’s no way I could have introduced any alternative fashion into the office place. Designer Feral Childe certainly doesn’t follow the same beliefs, since not only have they introduced a new line of office appropriate wear that’s verging on contemporary, it’s also eco-friendly. Burp Confidently with Burp Armor

burparmor-logo-skulls

‘I don’t always burp babies, but when I do, I prefer to use Burp Armor.’   I fully expect that Dos Equis’ Most Interesting Man in the World would use Burp Armor if he needed to burp a baby. After all, the guy wears a tux almost everywhere he goes.

On a personal note, let me say that I’ve caught baby vomit with many things in my day, but never with anything as cool as a Burp Armor organic burp cloth. This is true – both parts. Burp Armor is cool. And yes, I’ve caught a lot of vomit in my day. I’m like the Jason Varitek of baby vomit. I think I give babies reflux just by holding them. Read more »
