22 Ways to Green Your Halloween

22 Ways to Green Your Halloween

This could very well be my favorite time of the year. Although I did have a great time writing about the spring season with 22 Earth-Friendly Outdoor Activities for Spring. And, yeah I know, the winter holidays are great with candles, nutmeg and family. And maybe some of you love the fireworks, backyard grills and patriotism of July 4th, but I always found more common ground with Jack the Pumpkin King. No other holiday comes quite close to the magic of Halloween. Best of all, even though this spooky holiday has always been associated with orange and black, that doesn’t mean that you can’t paint this year green. The really scary stories begin to emerge if we don’t. So grab your hot apple cider and peruse my list of the top 22 ways from around the web to green your Halloween this fall. Muuuuahaha!

  1. Skip the costume rush this autumn and throw a little creativity into the pot to make your own Halloween costumes. Often just things hiding in the back of your closet, your trash can, or a thrift store are bursting with possibilities. For inspiration check out these cardboard box ideas from Inhabitat.
  2. Save your skin and the environment and paint on some organic, non-toxic makeup from Luna Organics.
  3. A personal favorite of mine, and a tactic that I have employed more than once, Trail’s Edge offers up some interesting ways to use your outdoor gear to create a costume that was meant to go outside.
  4. Inspire others and voice your opinion with an eco-message pumpkin. Try carving out the earth, a tree or the recycle sign.
  5. Carry around a reusable tote or pillow case to hold your candy instead of a plastic bag. Those grocery bags were never big enough or strong enough to handle my loot anyways.
  6. Hand out sustainable treats likes the fair trade chocolate gold coins from Divine or the unique and natural Ginger People Ginger Chews.
  7. Set the mood with some eco decorations like these fair trade skeleton streamers that are handmade in Mexico.
  8. O.K. I already said this, but there are so many great costume ideas! Here are some more from the Eco News Network.
  9. The Green Girls offer instructions for making your own organic face paint for the true DIYers.
  10. Watch one of these green Halloween movies from Alternative Consumer’s list to get you in the mood.
  11. Browse Etsy for unique handmade costumes and beautiful decorations.
  12. Try to find a Halloween costume swap in your area. Although National Costume Swap Day is October 8th, there are still many locations that have decided to hold their swaps later in the month.
  13. EcoKaren talks about how she made her very own solar powered, reusable jack-o-lantern. No more pumpkin guts to clean up the next morning that always results in fist shaking and profanity.
  14. Use a hand crank or solar powered flashlight for battery-free safety when the sun goes down.
  15. Compost your used pumpkins and uneaten candy!
  16. Carefully pack away decorations so you can use them again next year. R is for reuse.
  17. Decorate with LED lights. They last forever and are incredibly energy efficient!
  18. Do some reverse trick-or-treating by attaching a Global Exchange flier to some fair trade chocolate to build awareness about the problems facing the cocoa industry.
  19. Skip the toxic paraffin wax candles in your jack-o-lanterns and look for organic, soy-based candles that last longer too.
  20. Be resourceful with your pumpkins. Add some salt and bake the seeds. Cook the flesh. Here are ten ways to use a pumpkin for some inspiration.
  21. Reuse candy wrappers for crafts. Make candy wrapper jewelry or cover the front of a journal.
  22. Skip the candy all together and hand out useful items like soy-based crayons, seed packets or stickers of endangered animals.

I know that there are a million other ways out there to green your Halloween. What are some of your ideas?

Kate’s Organic Bars: Worth Their Weight in the Norwegian Mountains

Kate's Organic Bars: Worth Their Weight in the Norwegian Mountains

Some might call my selection process of items to bring on a backpacking trip slightly “intense”. While packing for an eight day trek through Norway’s Jotunheimen National Park my elimination process followed suit. So, when I decided that I could do without that additional pair of socks, thicker pair of gloves and paperback book to make room for a supply of Kate’s Real Food Organic Energy Bars, it was no small matter. “These better be good,” I thought as I reluctantly threw a favorite pair of wool hiking socks into the “stay” pile. The small space I had created was a perfect fit for the five different flavors of Kate’s Bars that she had generously sent me to review the week before.

After working on an organic farm, company founder Kate Schade made organic a priority that is exemplified in all of her bars. These wholesome treats use all natural and organic ingredients from the honey and fruit to the oats and seeds. Kate offers five distinct flavors but all of the bars share some common characteristics. Every bar utilizes multiple flavors that work together brilliantly. They look a little bit like bird food, but don’t let that deter you. The bars stay together remarkably well and are seemingly uncooked, like no-bake cookies, but they have no problem packing in a satisfying crunch. Each bar is dense and satisfying with energy ranges from a hearty 190 calorie snack to a body-fueling 360 calorie meal bar. The compact bars and fast-acting energy can be perfectly described as fire starter cubes for your body. Here’s my take on each of the flavors.

Grizzly Bar

The Grizzly is one seriously meaty energy bar. You don’t just nibble on the Grizzly. You rip off a chunk and you chew and chomp for a satisfying meal. It’s like Kate made the best gorp ever, and then smashed it into a block the size of a soap bar. The Grizzly has a really nice combination of peanut and fruit flavors, and also makes use of an incredible honey-dark chocolate blending, that leaves a satisfied sweet tooth and a brick of energy ready to burn. Bye-bye Snickers bars.

Tram Bar

The Tram Bar was Kate’s original energy bar and I can see why she decided to launch a business after the reception she must have received for her first try. The Tram bar is another not-messing-around bar that is similar to the Grizzly, however the Tram uses milk instead of dark chocolate. This solid hunk of energy was a most welcome companion during a particularly treacherous ascent early in the trip that involved steep boulder clambering and a pack that seemed all of 30 pounds too heavy. The Tram Bar has smoother, sweeter taste that I preferred, while my boyfriend preferred the dark flavor of the Grizzly. Each to his or her own.

Caz Bar

The Caz was by far the most exotic of the bars. It has this great spicy aftertaste that lingers behind and smells a little bit like Christmas time. The chai tea flavors and sesame seed crunch really make meaningful additions. My boyfriend and fellow critic claimed that the Caz was, “The most original energy bar that I’ve ever tasted.”

Handle Bar

I think that the Handle Bar bar was my least favorite of the lot, but I would guess that my dissatisfaction is almost entirely due to my lack of a real love for cherries. However, if you are a cherry-lover, have I got a treat for you. Kate’s Real Food has done a wonderful job of incorporating high quality cherries into the Handle Bar. We’re not talking about small dried up tart cherries, but full, moist and sweet morsels. The interesting thing about this bar is that the chocolate and cherry flavors really almost mask each other until, BAM! At which point you encounter the pleasant zip of cherry or smooth comfort of chocolate.

Stash Bar

The Stash Bar was my favorite of the five bars that I tried. The Stash packs this awesome sea salt aftertaste that is almost sweet for a very pleasant experience. I really enjoyed the medley of flavors that this bar offers and they all seemed to work together while I still felt like I could taste each and every one. You just have no idea until you try one of these. Seriously.

In the end, after being thoroughly humbled by chain-lined descents, trail running Norwegian high schoolers and white-out conditions I reflected on my initial compromises. In hindsight, it was obvious that I was more than rewarded for my daring sacrificial decisions with originality, perfect flavor synergy and sweet, sweet energy. To Kate’s Real Food bars. Thanks for just being real.

Must-Haves for Pet Moms

Must-Haves for Pet Moms

This Mother’s Day, don’t forget those women who work tirelessly in their role as “mom” to cats and dogs. According to a survey conducted by Lifetime Networks, 69 percent – or almost seven out of 10 – women between the ages of 18 and 49 own a pet. That’s a lot of pet moms!

As a “dog mom” of three, I can vouch: It’s nice to be recognized for all the love and devotion we pour into our fur balls. But a bouquet of flowers isn’t the best gift for a pet mom. Instead, consider these must-haves for any dog or cat mama.

Chocolate, Of Course!

Pamper your favorite pet mom with a sweet treat that also gives back. Not only is Rescue Chocolate 100 percent vegan, the company also donates 100 percent of their net profits to animal rescues around the country. My personal favorite? Peanut Butter Pit Bull!

‘Green’ Your Easter Basket from the Basket to the Treats

'Green' Your Easter Basket from the Basket to the Treats

Easter is a time of chocolate overdoses and egg hunts. Spring flowers are finally unfolding their brilliant colors and baby buds are reemerging from their long winter’s nap. Everything is turning green again, so why don’t you too?

An organic Easter basket can be a simple thing to put together. Here are some tips for pulling together green, recycled and organic components for the basket:

The Basket

The most important part of the Easter basket is, well, the basket. Handwoven is your best bet.

Ten Thousand Villages, an organization that sells fair trade handmade gifts from “thousands of disadvantaged artisans in 38 developing countries,” has a two-handled, oval date palm basket which could work nicely as an Easter basket. Ten Thousand Villages “encourages artisans partners to use environmentally friendly processes, sustainable natural resources and recycled materials to ensure each product has been crafted responsibly.”

The retailer Bellacor also offers a mini quilter’s basket, made by Eco Displayware, a company which produces “only eco-friendly products . . . made from sustainable materials (all are either biodegradable or recyclable.).”

The Grass

The plastic grasses sold in bulk in neon pinks, purples, greens and blues may add some color to your basket, but they will also permanently add color to the landfill they’ll end up in.

Instead, try stuffing your basket with the biodegradable “grass.” Century Novelty sells biodegradable Easter Basket grass by the bag.

Nashville Wraps also sells eco-friendly “Green Way” Recycled Color Tissue Shreds made from 100 percent recycled tissue shred by the bag in a wide variety of spring-like colors.

Entertaining in the New Year: Organic, Healthy, Fair Trade Recommendations

For many of us, spending more quality time with friends and family tops our New Year’s resolution lists for 2011. In our hectic lives, it is so important to take time to relax and enjoy our loved ones, even when there isn’t a major holiday involved. You can start by planning a festive gathering this year that does not need to be fancy, but rather heartfelt, featuring yummy food, some bubbly and a crowd of your nearest and dearest.

Here are some of my suggestions on how to get creative with your 2011 soirees:

Organic Sparkling Wine

New Year’s Eve isn’t the only time to break out the bubbly. Champagne and sparkling drinks make any occasion fun and lively and feel like a celebration.

If you’re trying to be more “green” this year, how about trying one of many delicious organic selections? The folks over at the Organic Wine Company have several options. The Organic Wine Company says its wines are made of certified organically grown grapes and that it promotes “environmental responsibility.”

If you are in the mood for something fruity, how about the Blanquette de Limoux Brut Bernard Delmas at $19.99 per bottle? It is a delicious sparkling wine with hints of green apple and lemon flavors.

Or if you prefer a trendy bubbly, consider a bottle of 2009 Prosecco Riva Moretta Perlage at $16.99 per bottle. It has a clean and crisp taste and remains a very popular choice.

What to Bring to a Party: Delectable, Green, Fair Trade Host/Hostess Gifts

It’s holiday time and although one can feel a bit frazzled, I feel it is important to take time out of our busy schedules to visit with friends, co-workers and family members. It can be challenging to find that “perfect something” to bring as a host/hostess gift, but hopefully these ideas will make things a bit easier.

Since food is my thing, my suggestions are primarily edible selections but I did add a few food-related suggestions as well. None of the items cost more than $25 so they’ll also be easy on the wallet:

Fair Trade Chocolates

If you have a sweet tooth, how about bringing a few beautifully wrapped chocolate bars to a holiday gathering or party? Divine Chocolates is a fair trade chocolate company that is 45 percent owned by West African cocoa farmers and, according to Divine’s web site, “ensures farmers receive a better deal for their cocoa and additional income to invest in their community.”

Divine Chocolate offers products such as Dark Chocolate Covered Salted Fudge, Milk Chocolate Nut Pralines and their 3.5-ounce chocolate bars in Dark Chocolate, Dark Mint and Dark Raspberry.

You can buy their products at Whole Foods or through their web site. The chocolate bars go for about $3.50 per bar.

Organic Cheeses with Fruit Spreads

If you are heading to a cocktail party, I love to bring a simple white plate with an organic cheese, some arugula, a jar of fig spread (or a fruit syrup) and crackers. You can add a small cheese knife if you wish. The guests can enjoy the appetizers and the host/hostess will be thrilled to have the plate and knife after the party has ended. If you want to make it fancy, you can always wrap the cheese plate in cellophane and tie with a ribbon. (I would wait until just before giving the gift to wrap it up.)

Here are some suggestions for the components of this gift: The Sonoma Syrup Co. sells a variety of fruit preserves such as Black Currant Berry, Candied Fig and Vanilla and Meyer Lemon for $9. The Meyer Lemon CheeseDrizzler is made in Sonoma in small batches with “organic California Meyer Lemons and a splash of California Dolce,” the site says.

As for the cheese, PastureLand, a Minnesota-based artisan cheese company, offers an amazing selection of cheeses that are crafted from organic milk from 100 percent grass-fed cows. PastureLand touts its eco-friendly practices on its web site saying that they use “intensive rotational grazing and year-round soil management to improve the vitality of our pastures and the health of our animals.” Cheese varieties include: True Raw Milk Cheddar, Goodhue Grass-Fed Gouda and Millville Aged 100 Percent Grass-Fed Cheddar.

Kids’ Snacks Showdown

It’s a fact: Kids are going to snack. From toddlerhood – when most pediatricians sanction two snacks a day – all the way to college and beyond, kids will consume between-meal nibbles. It’s often up to you whether these snacks contain nutritional value, or whether they’re just sources of empty calories. The snacks you choose can also keep the planet in good shape, as well as limiting your child’s exposure to potentially harmful chemicals. Let’s pit some standard snacks against their greener alternatives. Read more »
