With the close of the Winter Olympics yesterday, I wanted to draw your attention to one of the coolest style stories that I learned about during the Games.
Roots is a clothing company that’s based firmly in Canada. It’s not an official sponsor of the games this year, although it has been in the past. There’s been a bit of controversy over the fact that the company has promoted patriotic athletic wear over the last few months, apparently in an attempt to conduct ambush marketing, but that’s all by-the-by in this story.

Gone are the days of itchy hemp and loose fitting tie-die, eco-conscious fashion is in and it’s pulling no punches. Valentines is the perfect time to highlight how and why sustainable fashion is going to be the sexiest thing of 2010:
1. Support On The Catwalk
2010 is the U.N.’s International Year of Biodiversity. To support the campaign, nearly 50 top designers from around the world contributed to a show and strutted their green stuff in Geneva in January. According to Lucas Assuncao of the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development, sustainable fashion is now pulling in between $150 million and $200 million in sales per year; “an increasingly significant chunk of the market”. Keep reading →

Ecoist is a company that creates and sells eco-friendly items primarily made from discarded product labels which are then recycled and turned into fashionable, functional and fun products that create conversation and look pretty neat too. Unlike some eco-friendly fashion companies, Ecoist doesn’t want people to buy their items just because they’re eco-friendly, they want them to buy them because they follow trends you’d see on celebrities or on the runways, AND they have the added bonus of minimal environmental impact. Wouldn’t you like to pick up a purse and be able to say, “it’s just like Victoria Beckham’s, but mine didn’t require a mortgage or take away a piece of my soul and morality because of it’s environmental impact”? Who says office wear has to be stuffy and boring? One of my former employers, that’s who. From the man’s style blazers, to the pantyhose in the non-air conditioned office in summer; there’s no way I could have introduced any alternative fashion into the office place. Designer Feral Childe certainly doesn’t follow the same beliefs, since not only have they introduced a new line of office appropriate wear that’s verging on contemporary, it’s also eco-friendly. There’s nothing more enjoyable then a nice pair of underwear, or even sexy lingerie to turn up the heat in the relationship. But while you might be turning up the heat between the sheets, you probably aren’t thinking about what impact your (or your man’s) favorite lingerie has had upon the environment in the manufacturing process. You deserve the opportunity to enjoy your underwear without the guilt of what you’re doing to your environment, and in all fairness to your partner that’s just not where your attention should be. But let’s face it, when the environment is at stake, it can be hard to feel romantic; so instead get your hands on sustainable lingerie that won’t distract you from working on your relationship, if you know what I mean. Paper clothing may seem like a designer’s error where the designer neglected to translate pattern to fabric, but think again, because Tyvek clothing, the same material used for mailing envelopes and house wrap, is rocking the fashion world in a very big way. Tyvek clothing by House-Wear, is a sustainable, recyclable, eco-stylish fashion line that minimizes environmental impact, increases the lifespan of clothing, and supports the American economy to boot. It’s officially the summer season, time to upgrade with some eco-friendly flip-flops fellas.
There are few product categories with a richer assortment of greenified choices than the humble – and not so humble – pantheon of flip-flops. The flip-flop making world seems to have decided that making flips that make the world flop aint at-one with the flop-makers ethos – hence all the choices. Though be forewarned, gone are the days of the $15 flop. Without further delay – some of our favorite guy-flop choices for the summer:
Keen Waimea H2: $50
Whether you’re just afraid of the ol’ stub, or you’re just recovering from this seasons blackened toe-bang debilitation from way too many big days at Alta or Jay, these comfy Keen’s will do you right. As with all Keen shoes, you need to get used to their unique style. Thankfully, the Waimea H2 also comes in a more subdued all-black version, and with uppers made from recycled bike tires, and a manufacturer that’s committed to Mama E, you can feel good about the buy.
Reef Greenwall: $46
What they’ve got: Organic cotton upper, water-based/non-toxic adhesives, recycled content in the footbed, and the comfort that comes from a company that is al about flip-flops. What they’re missing? You guessed it – the bottle opener on the sole. Don’t they realize that since we’re greener than the rest, we’ll be sure to pocket-then-recycle that cap rather than drop it on the beech? I think we’ve earned the bottle opener.
All that being said, the Greenwall’s casual sophistication will shout ‘I can pull off linen pants after dark’ to the ladies, so you’ll probably be drinking wine by candlelight anyway. Keep reading →
