Green Toys Giveaway: What Was Your Favorite Childhood Toy?

Green Toys Giveaway: What Was Your Favorite Childhood Toy?

We all had a favorite toy that we loved to pieces (sometimes literally), lost frequently (thus requiring our parents to get a replacement or else listen to the whining and/or sobbing) or dragged to bed with us each night no matter how grimy the toy might have been.

That toy was special because it was wildly fun, cuddly or sparked our imagination . . . or was all three things at once.

In honor of those fond memories of our beloved childhood playthings, IzzitGreen has teamed up with Green Toys to offer Izzit readers the chance to win the company’s best selling, very popular, eco-friendly Recycling Truck.

Perfect for children ages 1 and up, the Recycling Truck is made from recycled milk containers, is BPA-free, has no metal axles and is made in the United States, in California to be exact. (See Izzit’s profile on the uber-green company, Green Toys, here.)

Do you know a child who would love to send the Recycling Truck rumbling around the house, through the grass outside or down the sidewalk?

Tell us about your favorite childhood toy in the comments section below by Friday, April 29 at noon EDT. The Izzit commenter who posts the best childhood toy story (as determined by Izzit staff) will receive a free Recycling Truck, which retails for $24.99, courtesy of Green Toys.

Green Toys Inc.: Recycling Their Way to Loads of Fun

Green Toys Inc.: Recycling Their Way to Loads of Fun

Eco-friendly toys have increased in popularity in recent years due in part to the numerous toy safety recalls and the trend of consumers becoming more eco-conscious.

Green Toys Inc. is one example of a company that is creating products that are fitting the demand of a growing number of consumers. Founded in 2007 by Robert von Goeben and Laurie Hyman, Green Toys sells toys ranging from blocks, chef and kitchen sets and outdoor toys (flying discs, planting kits, jump rope), to baby toys and toy vehicles, all of which are made from recycled materials.

“Green Toys Inc. provides consumers with environmentally friendly and safe products while making efforts to improve and preserve the world around us,” von Goeben, Green Toys’ president and co-founder told IzzitGreen.

“Green Toys products and raw materials are tested by independent third party labs that have been accredited by the Consumer Product Safety Commission,” von Goeben added. “These extensive tests ensure mechanical safety as well as chemical compliance against BPA, phthalates, etc.”

3 Great Green-Gadget Toys for Kids

3 Great Green-Gadget Toys for Kids

Making your Christmas green nowadays can be tough. Kids are looking more toward new electronics, hip gadgets and state-of-the-art toys. This means an endless process of changing batteries and clogging up your surge protectors with power cords and rechargeable devices. And those previous “alternative” energy toys were just not as cool as there power-sucking counterparts.

Here at IzzitGreen, we have embraced our inner child and come up with our Top 3 Green Toys for Kids for this year’s holiday season:

What’s more fun than remote controlled cars? How about a wind-powered remote control car? Or a solar-powered one? Or even a hydrogen fuel cell car? Hammacher Schlemmer has a kit that includes all three. This one-of-a-kind gift idea is perfect for ages 5 and up who are looking for hours of extreme racing fun. The best part of the Renewable Energy Racers Set is its two-for-one gift potential. Remember the chemistry sets we all received and promptly sank the rest of our Christmas break into? Well now your aspiring engineering and future speed demon have found a common ground, along with a new weapon for the ongoing war against the family pet.

The Renewable Energy Racers Set has three futuristic looking cars that are powered using three different methods: Wind power, solar power and hydrogen fuel cell power. The set comes with a miniature windmill, solar panel and hydrogen cell for powering your eco-friendly racers. The solar panel and windmill can provide up to 20 minutes of racing from a 30-minute charge. The hydrogen cell can supply five minutes of power from a three-minute charge using the process of electrolysis. This means that only water is needed to power your eco-friendly racers.

Green Baby Bath Time

greenbabybath

Most kids love bath time – playing with giant soap bubbles, swimming with sharks and hippos, and splashing Mom and Dad. As a logical (sort of) adult, you’d assume that bath = clean and clean = good, right? Not always: some children’s bath products have additives that aren’t good for kids or for the earth, while others earn a gold star when it comes to natural, green ingredients. Make bath time not only fun, but also healthy – both for your little ones and for the environment.

Tubs
If your kids are big enough, they can soak in the grown-up tub. Littler ones will need special baby and toddler tubs. Steer clear of tubs containing PVC. The manufacture and disposal of PVC is terrible for the environment: it releases a cancer-causing chemical called dioxin, which becomes more concentrated as it moves up the food chain, and is extremely hard to get rid of. PVC often contains phthalates, additives that make it more flexible. Phthalates can cause developmental problems in children, including hormone imbalances. They’re also linked to various types of cancer. Read more »

Knu To You Kiddo

knu-redball-rocker

This recently reintroduced reproduction red rocker is ragin’?  If your toddler could alliterate, this is what she’d say.  Seriously.

Knu, a sustainably-focused modern furniture manufacturer in Michigan, has indeed introduced a reproduction of the 60′s classic kids rocker (predictably) called the Red Ball Rocker.  Which is to say they’ve restarted production of a very cool rocking-horse substitute that eschews the long horse face and faux fur for a gleaming red ball and chic design.  They’ve also replaced the potential ‘made for children by children’ vibe with ‘made in the USA from FSC certified materials by a company that geniunely cares about the environment’ vibe.  So how ’bout that pardner. Pretty nice indeed ma’am. Read more »
