Eco-Snowboards Carve Out a Spot for Niche

Eco-Snowboards Carve Out a Spot for Niche

Sometimes it can be difficult to navigate through the massive monster that is the snowboard marketplace as a rider or a company. Since 2009 Niche snowboards has been steadily carving out its own cubbyhole in the industry. Soon you’ll see why IzzitGreen took some serious notice, for reasons other than Niche’s steller mascot choice.

Based in Salt Lake City, UT Niche Snowboards is set apart from the masses through its complete and ground-up dedication to environmentally friendly construction materials. Niche is on a crusade to de-toxify the snowboard industry and is leading by example with a line of minimal impact snowboards.

Aether

The Aether, for example, is Niche’s answer for the all-mountain freestyle rider. This versatile board has a sustainably harvested poplar core for a mid-stiff flex. It also uses Niche’s Snappy-Sap(TM) bio-resin that, as you might imagine, is made from bio-renewable materials as opposed to the commonplace petroleum-based epoxies. Not only does this resin have a much lower environmental impact, but its incredibly strong bonding ability saves your board from the horror of delamination. Awesome.

Minx

This tricksy Minx park board was made just for the ladies, but don’t worry, no need to be gentle. Niche’s Magma Fiber (TM) is constructed from basalt, which as we all know from seventh grade science class, forms when volcanic lava cools. Magma Fiber (TM) provides a huge improvement over fiberglass. Not only is this magic material stronger, more elastic and lighter, but it is non-toxic, much easier to recycle and avoids the greenhouse gases that are released during fiberglass processing. So start hitting the boxes with this awesome eco-ride, and stop contributing to the bra tree.

Hoodie

Although primarily a hardgoods company, I had to throw in the Niche Hoodie. Available in either a hemp and organic cotton or bamboo and organic cotton blend, these long-fit hoodies are perfect for a little apres board and could even double as a dress for the ladies. The selective vertical branding and thumb holes are details that are as refreshing as they are full of attitude.

So much to say, such little space. So, make sure to check out all of Niche’s ecological know-how on its technologies page. Even though this awesome company is triumphing in its own eco-corner, I can only hope that the rest of the industry will smarten up and follow suit. We are in for a long, snowy winter. Trust me, I have a knack for these things. Time to grab your board (or sticks if that’s your thing) and pray for pow.

The Facts of Life…Can We Talk Honestly?

The Facts of Life...Can We Talk Honestly?

“What is a nice girl like you doing in the funeral business? “ A question that Cathy Boomer is often asked. To answer the question tells the story of someone who knows what it’s like to lose close family members. It tells the story of perseverance, and it tells the story of a desire to bring more choices to the Kansas City area for funeral care.

After a trip to Australia about 8 years ago, Cathy saw a storefront in a neighborhood in Sydney that looked inviting. “With flowers in the flower boxes and an awning on the street, it looked like a store that I would want to shop in.” After returning to the States and doing some research, she discovered that the shop – Simplistic Funerals – had all of the same services that we offered here in America, but it was just packaged differently. Instead of being an intimidating environment, it looked like a place that you would be comfortable entering.

Since that life-altering experience, Cathy has become a licensed Funeral Director and opened up her own personal vision of that storefront, Signature Funerals, located at 8019 State Line Road in Kansas City, Missouri. Locally owned, Signature Funerals has created a warm and inviting place to meet with families, along with space for small visitations and services. Cathy and her experienced Funeral Care team work closely with families to determine exactly what they need, the best place for their services, what to include, etc. “More than anything, I give them permission to openly discuss options and items for the funeral that they may not have at other funeral firms in Kansas City.” Those options may range from a service location that is a very traditional church setting or it might be at the Pilgram Chapel, the Johnson County Arboretum, a local park, or perhaps even the Midland Theatre, a Kansas City landmark.

Signature Funerals believes in education and making sure you understand the process before you or a loved one has a need. “When you’re being educated about the process in the middle of the need, it is incredibly difficult. To have confidence in your decisions, it is important to know about the process, your options, and start to think about what you want to communicate to your family about your wishes,” says Cathy. These wishes might even include a green funeral.

IzzitGreen: Cathy, you talk about Green Funerals – what does that mean, and is that something that’s new here in the United States?

Cathy: I see a Green Funeral as a process that can be implemented in steps.  Some might see cremation as a green funeral option with the ashes being returned to the environment – earth or water – in a number of different ways.  Others that are measuring carbon footprint might see a natural burial in a woolen shroud or biodgradable casket made of natural wood, wicker or rattan as an efficient or green burial.  So, whether you are selecting an urn made of salt or sand or burial in a natural setting, there are a number of green options.

IzzitGreen: It seems as though the funeral business never changes. Have there been any major innovations in the last century?

Cathy: When you look at innovation in every other industry over the last 50-100 years and compare it to the funeral industry, there has been very little change in our industry.  That said, the popularity of cremation as a final option has increased to nearly 50% across the United States versus the traditional process of a visitation at the funeral home followed by a funeral at a church.  While this decision is often financially based because cremation costs so much less, it inserts CHOICE back into the situation and puts the control back into the hands of the consumer.  No longer is a grieving family forced into making decisions because the funeral home – who’s been in business for generations upon generations – tells them it has to be a certain way.

Across the board, buying patterns have changed as well.  Whereas 50 years ago someone would go to a local family-owned hardware store, for example, now they go to Home Depot.  And with clothing, instead of asking the clerk at the local dress shop to “show me all of your blue dresses,” now you browse through the racks yourself and ask questions only when needed, or you avoid it all together and simply shop online.

In the funeral care business, historically, everything has been handled and controlled by the Funeral Director, leaving consumers and families uncomfortable and unhappy with the process and the experience.  Add on top of that exhaustion, overwhelming grief, and limited or no prior education about this important event and what needs to take place, it can be even further devastating.

IzzitGreen: You talk about “permission,” which is such an important concept. Can you elaborate?

Cathy: At Signature Funerals we believe that permissions are so important!  Permission to make different choices based on all of the options available, and to think differently and outside the box, so to speak.  A funeral is the ultimate celebration of someone’s life, and it’s important to tell their story in the manner in which it should be told.  That doesn’t always mean doing things the same exact way that other family members, friends, and neighbors have done it.

For a friend or family member who has passed that was not religious, people need to understand that it’s OK to hold a service in a non-religious location, yet still have a pastor or funeral celebrant lead the service.  And it’s OK to have both a visitation and service at the same location.  This works especially well when there are older friends and relatives who are less mobile, and when the crowd is larger and logistics are a challenge.  We held a beautiful service at a famous Kansas City landmark recently which opened a lot of eyes and hearts to what we can do and what a funeral can be.

While these are just a few mere examples, the point is that whether told through special music, poems, scripture, personal reflections, or a special location, the story deserves to be told in a manner that reflects the life of the loved one.  And whatever the preferences for location and cost, there are endless choices.  We encourage everyone to take time to think about those choices before the need arises, and give yourself permission to go about it your own way if that’s the way you choose.

IzzitGreen: We’re so impressed. Besides your warm and inviting location and setting, what else sets you apart from the other locally owned firms and corporate funeral companies?

Cathy: What is most important to our firm is that a valuable service to families in our community is affordable and the experience is updated to this century. From a modern setting to prices that are 30-60% less than a corporate owned funeral home, it is important to have additional choices for your funeral care.  What’s most important to Signature Funerals is personal service and a comforting experience for the lives of those we touch in Kansas City.

For more information on green funeral options, funeral planning, or to contact Cathy Boomer directly, Signature Funerals can be reached in Kansas City at (816) 214-5174 and on the web at www.signaturefunerals.com.

Bamboo and Organic Active Wear from Green Apple

Bamboo and Organic Active Wear from Green Apple

Green Apple Active Wear began in 2004 when accomplished athletic designer Cristofer Smith saw the need for a better product. Based in Manhattan Beach, California, Green Apple is passionate about creating products that offer healthier and more natural alternatives to the chemical-laden synthetics that much of the sportswear industry relies upon. With such a credible mission, its no wonder that ever since it’s birth this playful, unique and Earth conscious company has flourished.

Green Apple’s products are constructed with an eco-friendly organic cotton and bamboo blend using bamboo that is organically grown on farms certified by OCIA and NOP. The fibers used by Green Apple are also Oeko-Tek certified, meaning that they have been put through the highest quality processing and are tested at the end stages to ensure that they are free of chemicals. Green Apple uses only eco-friendly dyes that offer a 60% lower impact than other dyes used in the industry.

The entire eco-collection is just begging to be layered and mixed, but here are my top picks.

Kasmir Cami

This stylish Kasmir Cami is decorated with eco-friendly, water-based prints and has a dainty y-back that is feminine and sporty. This tank has a longer cut to stay in place while you move and the stretchable, lightweight fabric is naturally breathable to keep you cool.

Elise Sport Bra

The elastic straps inside the Elise Sport Bra provide ultimate comfort and control, but this full-coverage bra is stylish enough to be worn alone. The beautiful v-neckline and criss-cross back are sure to turn some heads whether you’re in a yoga studio or Zumba class.

Congo Hoodie

The Congo Hoodie pairs perfectly with yoga pants or jeans, and goes especially well with the Congo Yoga Flare Pants. The contrast stitching and water-based print in the hood create an original and classy look, while the streamlined cut creates a graceful silhouette.

Congo Yoga Flare Pants

These top selling yoga pants show off your best with a praise-worthy cut and contrast waistband. Green Apple didn’t forget the small details with the addition of a cute logo embroidered on the back of the leg and raw hem so that you can cut the pants to your perfect length.

Fitted Yoga Short

The Fitted Yoga Shorts are ideal for summer workouts and hot yoga, thanks to the breathable eco-fabric that wicks sweat while you work. The wide waistband and flat seams keep things comfortable and the well placed stitching complements your back side.

For your next workout, breath easy and put something clean and natural against your skin.

Must-Haves for Pet Moms

Must-Haves for Pet Moms

This Mother’s Day, don’t forget those women who work tirelessly in their role as “mom” to cats and dogs. According to a survey conducted by Lifetime Networks, 69 percent – or almost seven out of 10 – women between the ages of 18 and 49 own a pet. That’s a lot of pet moms!

As a “dog mom” of three, I can vouch: It’s nice to be recognized for all the love and devotion we pour into our fur balls. But a bouquet of flowers isn’t the best gift for a pet mom. Instead, consider these must-haves for any dog or cat mama.

Chocolate, Of Course!

Pamper your favorite pet mom with a sweet treat that also gives back. Not only is Rescue Chocolate 100 percent vegan, the company also donates 100 percent of their net profits to animal rescues around the country. My personal favorite? Peanut Butter Pit Bull!

Eco-Friendly Sleeping Bags: Less is More

Eco-Friendly Sleeping Bags: Less is More

We’re constantly surrounded by things that we don’t need. While many companies are trying to sell us on a product’s extra features and add-ons, Big Agnes has found a value-added way to remove a feature from a product, a feature that most people would argue that they would absolutely not go into the woods without.

The Big Agnes Sleeping System

The Colorado-based company Big Agnes has developed a unique sleeping bag system that unites the bag and sleeping pad into one ingenious arrangement resulting in a slew of amazing benefits. Big Agnes has created a system in which a pad slides into an integrated sleeve on the now uninsulated bottom of a Big Agnes sleeping bag while the top two-thirds of the sleeping bag is insulated like normal.

This exclusive combination is based on the idea that when insulation is compressed under your body, it loses most of its insulating power anyway. The Big Agnes system eliminates the useless insulation and allows the pad to provide the needed insulation instead. Like your bed at home, the mattress is underneath for comfort, and the covers are over top for warmth. This minimalist approach allows for a smaller pack size, less weight to carry, more comfort and reduced risk, plus it’s eco-friendly. Try rolling off of your pad now!

Master the Healthier Way to Exercise Outside with Merino Wool Layers

Master the Healthier Way to Exercise Outside with Merino Wool Layers

The air is crisp, the mornings are cold and the thought of stepping onto a treadmill again makes your stomach turn. When you move your workout into a natural environment, you can say goodbye to waiting for equipment, commuting to the gym and costly membership fees. Plus, adding some outdoor exercise into your routine allows you more flexibility when traveling and a daily dose of fresh air and vitamin D.

By hitting the trail this spring, you might be doing yourself a mental favor in addition to the physical ones. A recent study was conducted by the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry in the UK in which the college performed trials involving 833 adults and found that  exercising in natural environments could have a multitude of beneficial effects over working out indoors.

If you do decide to bundle up and get some fresh air, you may experience, “greater feelings of revitalization and positive engagement, decreases in tension, confusion, anger and depression, and increased energy,” according to the study published in the research journal Environmental Science and Technology in February

The Importance of Layers

People often dress too warmly only to find that they are overheating during exercise and then get quickly chilled as their sweat starts to evaporate and dry. One of the tricks to exercising outside is to properly regulate your temperature. By dressing in layers you can easily adjust your clothing to your changing needs and take off layers as you begin to work and put them back on as needed.

For my layering scheme, I am all about sustainable merino wool. Fine-cut merino wool is itch-free and has a great warmth-to-weight ratio. The finely crimped fibers create millions of air pockets to keep you incredibly warm without the bulk. Merino also does a great job of removing sweat from your skin, keeping you warm, dry and smelling great.

For an eco-friendly option try RedRam apparel. An offshoot of the Icebreaker brand, RedRam and Icebreaker are centered around renewable, biodegradable and ethically-sourced merino wool. Merino wool is a renewable resource using water, grass and sunshine as the raw inputs, and also takes considerably less energy to process than most other fibers.

Icebreaker and RedRam work directly with only 140 growers most of which are located in the beautiful Southern Alps of New Zealand. This small supply chain allows the company to create strong relationships with the growers and also enforce their strict animal welfare requirements.

Organics with Class for Your Fine Irish Lass

Organics with Class for Your Fine Irish Lass

While IzzitGreen is hitting the pavement to spread awareness about the environment, sustainability and everything GREEN, we always take time to care for our skin. And one company that we find too legit to quit, is Indigo Wild® in Kansas City.

These guys are on fire. Not only do we absolutely love and support their 100 percent natural and organic products, but their marketing department is genius. Not only do they share a similar sense of humor as our beloved mascot Izzit, but any company that makes outrageously good products AND makes us all laugh, is a company we want to work with.

This author happened to purchase the extra large Peppermint Zumbo Kiss Stick along with some mint soap as a Christmas gift. Needless to say, they were a SMASH hit!

Top Insulated Eco-Vests for Super Warmth

Top Insulated Eco-Vests for Super Warmth

Insulated vests offer great versatility for active outdoor adventures when the temperatures drop. Wear one alone to keep your core warm and your arms free, or under a shell to add heat to any outfit.

When picking out an insulated vest this winter, you have several choices to make. An easy one is the decision to purchase an environmentally friendly vest, which turns out to be pretty easy with all of the great options available. Another assessment needed is whether PrimaLoft® synthetic or down insulation offers the benefits that you are looking for.

Plain and simple, down is pretty much the warmest insulation out there. It also possesses an exceptionally high warmth-to-weight ratio. This means that down remains very warm while being very lightweight and compressible. You can also get the amount of insulation that you need by purchasing something with anywhere from 450-fill-power down to 900-fill-power, 900-fill-power being the warmest. Down is also incredibly durable, and with proper care, it can literally last a lifetime.

On the other hand, PrimaLoft® synthetic insulation equates to about the 500- to 550-fill-power range in down. Nevertheless, PrimaLoft® will keep you much warmer than down in soggy conditions as it retains much of its thermal performance when wet. PrimaLoft® also tends to be less puffy than down because it uses a greater number of smaller fibers to trap more air spaces, but is still very lightweight and compressible. PrimaLoft® is also a great choice for people who may be allergic to goose down.

There really is no “right” answer; it all depends on what benefits you are looking for. When the verdict is in, take a look at the following PrimaLoft® and down insulation alternatives. All vests are made with a recycled polyester shell to warm your body and your soul.

Primaloft® Insulation:

The North Face Animagi Vest

Ingenious name aside, this vest is great for running or cross country skiing with built-in stretch side panels to allow movement. Also in women’s styles.
